• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture Files?

Does FSDS create texture files. I don't find it in the tutorials. What the show is the textures applied to the model directly.

No, like most modelling tools you have to create the textures yourself. After that you can map them on the object.

I have been wading through the FSDS documentation and I think I am figuring it out. There does not seem to be anything that makes understanding it simple.

I'll just keep HACKING on it!

Hi,

I don't think the FSDS documentation will cover how to create a texture, since that is normally not something you do in the modelling tool. You will just use the textures that are available already (or that you have made in some way).

FSDS has a facility to make texture templates. I have made a template for a single part. I am trying to learn to make a template for multiple parts.

I have software to edit the templates into texture files.

The very basics

Texture files must meet certain criteria:
Sizes: 128 x 128px or 256 x 256px or 512 x 512px or 1024 x 1024px. Sizing must be exact - FSDS will not open any file that is not sized to one of these settings

Textures can be made with your favorite graphics editor - even PBRUSH for very basic textures. These "raw" textures will be what is known as 24bit. I have had great luck with Photofiltre.

You simply paint your walls and roof colors in one of these blank images. You can also paint your windows and doors on whatever wall you desire. The file is saved as a .bmp file.

For the texture to be usable in FS, it must be converted to DXT1 format (as a rule of thumb) - other formats may be required depending upon if you wish to have transparencies or other eye candy. Conversion can be made with DXTbmp (good) or ImageTool (better). ImageTool is on the FSX SDK.

Once the textures are made and converted, they can then be used in FSDS to "paint" your models. The Textures must be in the Texture folder of the airport you are building which is in the Addon Scenery Folder.

Hope this is written well enough to be understandable.

This is the very basics but should be enough to get you going. At least you will know the procedure.
