• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Texture Mapping and Draw Call Optimization ?

Morn'n Folks,

I've been playing around with the various features of MCX and just need a little guidance... I started my first projects with individual 512x512 texture sheets - so most models I've made so far use two 512x512's... I've since realized - it would be better to have a single larger 1024x1024 instead... I noticed some of the optimization tools in the Material Editor of MCX... I've been planning on trying to combine all my textures - so that I should average two models per 1024x1024... Is there a way to do this in MCX where the models will retain their original relative mapping positions - when I combine them on a single sheet - meaning I wouldn't have to remap everything ? Would it be possible to process two models to the same 1024x1024 sheet ?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

No, at the moment that is not possible. The drawcall minimizer will make a new sheet per model at the moment. There is no way yet to optimize multiple models at once. But I have to say that is on the wishlist somewhere :).

Thanks Arno...
:)

Thanks Lane - yeah - maybe I'll try that - thanks for the suggestion...
:)

Scott

Hi Scott,
what you could try, if the objects are Gmax-Objects. Merge them together in Gmax and Export them as one object. Then optimize the textures with MCX and export them in 3ds-format again. When you open the object with Gmax again you could split the objects and export two models as MDL-files.

Strange idea but it could work.

Hi Jorg,

That's a great idea - I'll just have to work out the spacing beforehand... I'm still having trouble with MCX on this though... I took a single object with (3) 512x512 textures - selected 1024x1024 in MCX material editor - set border pixels to 0 - and hit optimize... Instead if taking all three textures and placing them on a single 1024x1024 it just made all three 1024x1024 with three quarters of the sheet empty... Same number of draw calls - just larger textures... Am I missing something or have some gross conceptual error on what MCX is supposed to do to optimize the textures ???

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
I never had that problem, when the textures fit in the new size.
Have you checked in the Material Editor under Optimize, that the parameters of the 3 materials are the same? If you have a left and right side (marked red and green) with different values, MCX has no chance to put them together.

Jörg

Hi Jorg,

I'll look for what you mentioned... I'll check tonight - appreciate all your assistance - sir...
;)

Hi Jorg,

Got it working - I have no idea what I'm doing differently but it seems to work... The prediction doesn't seem to work though - but - once I hit optimize - the textures are now combined correctly... Thanks...

Scott
