• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture problem on objects

I have imported a bunch of rwy 12 and other fs9 objects into my fsx design work.. MOST work just fine. However, I have a few that the model shows up either all black or totally white. There are texture files (.bmp) for them but apparently they are not being seen properly.

Is there a format that they should be or type of bmp or something that maybe these few are not? It is so few, I normally wouldn't care, and would just delete them, but 4 of them are ones that I desperately want to use.

Thanks for any help...

Hi,

Which version of FSX are you using? Prior to SP2 there was a bug that untextured polygons (so coloured ones) of pre-FSX object show black. So it could be that those parts are not textured.

Else I have no clear idea, as the texture restrictions on formats, sizes, etc have not really changed from FS2004.

Arno,
I should post this info in my signature I think...I tend to forget not everyone knows what I have. LOL

I have FSX with Acceleration. I believe it to be totally updated.

I am at a loss myself, as I see the textures but for some reason, fsx is ignoring them.

Hi,

That sounds good idea, I have no idea then why they appear black or white. Would it be possible to attach the object so when can try to reproduce your problem?

Here is just one example. Flag pole with US and POW flags flying in the wind. The bmp files are there. The mdl file is there.

I put the bmp files in my texture folder. I put the mdl and xml files in my scenery folder. I can place the flag pole, but it shows up as just black with black flags flying.

I have many other examples, if you need more, I will post them for you.

(hmm.. can't upload rar files.. I changed it to zip file. maybe rar should be allowed??)

Hi,

I tested the object and it is working fine.

But in your post I notice one possible problem. You mention putting the MDL and XML file in the scenery folder. I hope you are aware that FS does not read these files. You need to create a BGL file using BGLComp before FS can read it.

sorry..was a mistype..Yes, I created the bgl and put it in there.. Hmm...I will make a new one and see what happens...thank you for testing.. I'll post my results..

I should have done this the first time. I am posting a folder that has a few of my things in it.

I did find the problem with the flag. The bmps in my active folders were corruped. I put in the ones I uploaded and it worked just fine.

I am including my stair truck wich still does not work. If you see a problem, please let me know. I know it could very well be me. hehe

Also, can you tell me why some bmp's are NOT viewable without using photoshop or some other app, and some are viewable with basic windows viewer? I know it is different type or something is added, but I am just curious as to what/why?

In this folder, the stairs are the one I can't get to work now.

Hi,

It seems the stairs use 24 bit BMP files as textures. That is not supported by FS, you better convert them to DXT1.

The textures that you can only open with some special tools are probably extended DXT files as well. They are preferred because they are in a format that the video card can use natively and have compression and mipmaps included. But simple viewers can not open them in general.

Thank you very much, as always!!! Odd that the stairs would be that way, since these came from a flight sim site.

However, knowing these things will help greatly when I open the web site I am making for objects, textures, etc....
