• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Textured Poly

At what altitude should I set a Textured Poly for an airport at 5000ft ASL? Should I set the poly to the airport altitude, or set it at ground level or default level of 0? I tried putting it at the airport level but it doesn't show up. Or should it be put at the altitude of the actual area that I want it? The airport has various altitudes within different areas. It's both a driving airport as well as a regular airport. I'm creating missions for flying (and driving) and I just want to spice the ground scenery up a bit, but I don't want to use Photoreal Scenery because it flattens everything out and takes away trees and other land scenery. I just want to use something simple by making Textured Polys. Done it int the past but it's been a while and I forgot some things about how to do it.

All I want to do is place a texture OVER the existing ADE texture, ie: cover the ground with snow (I do not want to use either a custom poly, apron, or PR Scenery). I simply want to put snow over the ground. I have my texture, but I can't get it to show up. I used 1024x1024 resolution for the texture to preserve the detail. I saved it as an extended bmp as DXT1. I did this once before, but now I can't get it to work.

What type of textured Polygon ?

A CVX vector polygon is a type of "Land Class", and we pick the texture from a pick list in ADE or SBuilderX to make it.

Remember that custom photo-real aerial imagery is a special type of Land Class that covers up all other Land Class textures.

Airport objects (RWYs, Taxiways, Aprons etc.) are able to cover up custom photo-real aerial imagery; that is how the pecking-order works in FS.

that's why I don't want to use PR scenery. I want to put a CVX textured Poly over the existing 'land class' poly. Like I said , I did this once before but can't remember how.

I'm using SBX to make the CVX poly. I'm using a custom texture.

I would not speculate on something I have personally examined by seeing the source files, SBuilderX or ADE project files, and output BGL with mapped texture files.

When you state that you want to "place a texture OVER the existing ADE texture, ie: cover the ground with snow", you describe covering up an existing ADE generated custom CVX vector Land Class Polygon, or an ADE generated default MS-AFD texture such as is used for Aprons.

Which program did you use to create the Textured Polygon ?

I'm using SBX to make the CVX poly. I'm using a custom texture.

I recall that endeavor, and at that time, it was baffling as to exactly what settings and texture file type it required for a legacy Polygon format.

IIRC, you set that particular task aside pending further learning about legacy format LWM / VTP textured Polygon types.

BTW: In your current Windows, FSX, and SBuilderX installations, did you also install the recommended "Modified Terrain.Cfg file" ?

If not, you may not be able to display some types of textured Polygons at run time in FSX.

Modified Terrain.Cfg file 'giveth'; FS' default Terrain.Cfg file 'taketh away' ...the ability to see textured terrain polygon scenery content. :pushpin:

Yeah, I did all that, and since then my system has been upgraded. I just figured out I left out a step. I have to load the BGL into MCX and then resave it as a new scenery file. Something about the BGL file that SBX creates that won't work in FSX. It has to be converted first.

Probably MCX' Ground Polygon Wizard functionality allowed MCX in 'normal' mode to process the flat 3D textured Polygon and convert it.

So, what "upgrade" were you able to implement for your PC ?

upgraded the GPU to a GTX980ti (Couldn't afford the 1080) with 2GB VRAM, maxed my RAM to 16GB, upgraded the processor to 3.0GHz from the 2.5GHz. new installation of WIN11 PRO. Cleaned all drives and replaced defective ones. Reloaded FSX completely. All is working great other than a few stutters that I am still working on. Haven't figured that one out yet. thinking of upping to FS 2024 in the near future.
I'm also debating on getting a flight yoke with controls and foot pedals. (Not sure if it's worth it or not). Would like to go VR but the 980 don't support it. I will most likely up to the 1080 before getting MSFS 2024. I also want another 32" monitor and a small 9" monitor for ATC window. I also updated my Internet adapter to one that supported the more reliable 5G 5.0GHz internet. My old one would only support the lower 2.4GHz signal which was a bit slow and slowed down my online flight experience, works a bit better now with the 5G.

I think I will stick with PR Scenery for what I want to do. I just realized why I abandoned using polys, it tends to cover up the roads and, runways, and taxis to where you can't see them. I think I can work around the flattening problem with PR. I can just place several sceneries in each square on the grid instead of placing them over the Land Class areas. I only want to cover the island in snow anyway. Now, do you still have the link to the instructions on creating PR Scenery? I think during all the upgrading and cleaning things up, I may have inadvertantly deleted my instruction files, I remember some of the steps, but not all of them, I can't remember how to do the maps or how to place the scenery in the correct spot.

I have a question, where can I find some better 'grass' textures? I hate the default ones in fsx. Grass isn't supposed to be 'grey', it's supposed to be 'green'. Is there some replacement textures for land and grass somewhere. I found water texture replacements and they look great. But the land looks horrible.

The links to various tutorials are still in our discussion threads at FSDEV forums.

The "flattening" you describe is the absence of Autogen annotation on custom PR Land Class.

I tried searching for it, but no luck, I'll look around on my backups and see if I by any chance, made a backup of it.

I lucked out..thank God I made backups before redoing my system. I truly believe in backups now. Now I get to play around a bit. Then I can get back in the air. Just wish I could learn how to land without running off the darn runway. I'm thinking that maybe getting a set of controls and a flight yoke might help.
