• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Textures and Framerates

Hello
I've had some success in designing a few sceneries which have been generally well received. However the most common complaint I've had, it is hard on framerates for medium and low end computers.

I plan to redesign some of my sceneries and would like too know from the more knowledgable designers, how can I improve my scenery so it is more framerate friendly?

Some info
To design the scenery I use Airport for Windows. For the macros I use FSDSv2 and save them in API format. When making the macros I make every attempt too keep the object points to a minimum. I create my own textures using Paintshop Pro v7 and save them as 256x256 8 bit. In the scenery that is affected most I also use a lot of Gerrish Grey trees.

Any pointers would be most helpful and much appreciated.

Thanks and Best
Vern

Hi Vern,

It is always hard to say how you can improve performance.

My first attempt would be to take a look at the placement of your objects. Are the v1 and v2 values optimal for example? If you set these ranges wrong that can cost a lot of performance.

Other things to look at are if you have one model that takes most performance, then you could try to optimize that. Or if you use one object a lot, it would certainly be worth to put it in an object library.

You might also be able to get small improvements by converting your textures to the DXT format with mipmaps. But usually that does not make a really big difference.

Thanks for the suggestions Arno.. much appreciated. By V1 and V2 values I'm presuming you mean visual distance. I keep the more important and bigger hangers at 15 km and the small stuff at 3 km.

I will convert the textures to DXT and see what happens.
Best
Vern
