• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Textures and other

Well I have my Glider

If only I could work out how to put a texture on it and how to get it to show in FS9 it would be great.

For textures I always use Photoshop, I have created a 512X512 image of the parts and saved as a .bmp file, trouble is I keep getting a warning saying they are 24 bit and will not work, so I try 16...they still don't show...frustration is an understatement.

As for exporting, I thought the easiest thing to do as it is only for static is to create an mdl file then tweak the xml and so on as per Gmax...nothing appears, not even a boring grey glider.

I gotta be honest, compared to Gmax it is soooo confusing :banghead: :banghead: . I am seriously thinking that maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all, I know the only problem with Gmax when it comes to aircraft is the backgrounds..they keep moving, which in a ll fairness is simple in FSDS...

Can anyone give me some idea what I am doing wrong here

Hi,

I also use FSDS3, I think I had that problem myself at first although I seem to remember that despite the 24 bit warning, it did show the textures.

The method I use is to edit my 24 bit copy with mspaint etc, save it, open with imagetool, change to DXT1 (32 bit extended bitmap) and create mipmaps, then save that version to the scenery/aircraft texture folder, but also to the main FS9 texture folder so that FSDS3 can use it.

The only other thing I can think of is perhaps the MWGFX.dll package from Martin Wright, I think FSDS3 uses that too, although I'm not sure how.

If you need any more specific info about paths etc, just let me know.

Cheers

I have to be honest, I am more than disappointed with my purchase. I am finding it to be a pretty unstable program, so far it has ctd about 6 times in the last 2 hours  . As for texturing it makes Gmax look like a starter pack, I have just tried again, created a new texture for the fuselage in photoshop, saved it as a 24 bit bmp (thats all it will do) used image tool to change to DXT1 format and then gone through the lengthy process of trying to apply the texture. I seem to get about 4 boxes pop up before I get the actual screen to 'draw around' the texture.

Its a shame really as once I had got the hang of building and shaping it is certainly easier than Gmax, but the rest seems pretty complicated and cumbersome, unless its just a lack of simple tutorials...ah well on on

Now I am beginning to think it is me, I have just created a simple tube and the textures appear no problem, no faffing about at all

Glad you're getting some results, I always thought FSDS was for those (like me) who just can't get it together with Gmax, so it's interesting to hear positive comments from someone who's familiar with both :)
