• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texturing issue

Using GMAX for FSX.

I have a problem when texturing. Certain polys seem to be upside down or something. Its hard to explain so i include a picture. U can see ontop of the boat that certain sections reflect differently to others. Can anyone help me with this? I seem to get this problem alot when modeling. The problem seems to appear whenever I use a boolean function on a mesh. Certain polys seem to have flipped.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1. check the normals for the affected polygons, you may have to flip them

2. check the smoothing groups for the affected polys. Do they use the same smoothing group as the adjacent polys, or worse have NO smoothing group assigned? The latter frequently occurs if you hand create or bool some polys.

thanks a ton bill...will definately try looking into that. I believe they have no smoothing.

Bill when you have some time could you explain to me with a little more detail how to set the smoothing groups and what number to set them to. Should i set each individual poly to a particular smoothing group or should i select all of the effected polys and set them to a particual smoothing group. Ive tried every single funtion i could find but no joy yet. Im obviously still learning as i go.

Excellent! In general though, my first recourse is to select all polys, then click on "Autosmooth."

99.9% of the time, it gives me good results. :D

The exceptions are generally at sharp edges, such as trailing edges of wings, elevator(s), rudder, etc. Those I usually wind up tweaking by hand.
