• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX The Boolean operation VS textures

Using FDSD V3.5 I start with a 60x60x20 box to make a hanger. I opertate on the box to create a LH, RH side and a back, no top or bottom. I put these in later. Using the Boolean function I cut retangular holes in the LH, RH and back for transparent windows. No problem with the boolean function.

The problem comes when I try and put textures on the inside and outside of the walls and the back. I am using NoveGold textures. After performing the Boolean operation many parts make up the sides and back instead of one solid part. How do I put the testures on?

Hi Tom

Select all the parts that will make up the wall and JOIN them. Then texture the wall.

Farly I have not been able to make your suggestion work. The sides and back are all one part at the start. I just delete the top, bottom and front to leave the two sides and back as one part. After I punch the retangular holes using the boolean function, there are many parts that make up each side and back.
I select each peice part that makes up the two sides and back then I look under parts to join seclect parts and Join is not highlighted. If i go ahead and select the texture for a side it has only a 3 points like each peace part.

I can make one wall, for example .1 inch thick and 20 inches high and 60 inches deep. I make a tool to cut out the rectangular hole using the boolean function for the window, no problem. In this case I can select each peice part and join selected and in this case it works, then I can apply the outside and inside textures no problem.

Hi Tom
I am petty sure that you are making another hanger that you will be taking your aircraft inside, so you need to have texture on the inside and out side of your walls.

So instead of using the Boolean tool (which will make a large number of polygons …which = low frame rate) And is hard to get textures to play nice

For a wall 60’X30’X 6” with four windows try this. NOTE I have FSDS set to feet.

Make the first cube 60’X 10’x .5” Origins at the bottom and the Origins XYZ all set to 0

Next make another cube the same but set origins to “Y” to 20.

Next make a new cube 5’X10’X.5” but set origins to “Y” to 10 and “X” to –27.5

For this cube you just made you can delete the TOP and BOTTOM polygons as they will never be seen and only add to the total polygon count

Next clone this cube making 4 copies set too 13.75 on the “X” axis, this will fill in the parts between the windows.

You can now hit the “a” key this will select all these part so you can JOIN them and then texture each side to your liking then clone this wall and move and rotate it to make the other side and back if you wish of perhaps make the back wall a different size.
This wall will be easier to texture and will have a lower polygon count.

Also after you join these parts and texture them, you can add another cube that will fill all four holes and put your glass texture on it ..all four window inside and out with just two polygons…nice hanger with great frame rate…

I will add FSC file for you to look at.

In my example the wall is 60 feet long 30 feet high and 6 inches thick.

Farly I looked at your fsc and in the past I have make hanger window similiar to what you have in your fsc. I just did it a little bit different.

I think I will give up on the boolean route for cutting out windows for haners, just too many part to contend with. As you stated there would be a frame rate hit. I think the boolean function is intended for use in building aircraft and I am just not into that.
