Hello,
sorry for this message but I feel a bit scared and I think I'll feel better if I can talk about it.

Nobody knows, nobody is talking about it, but here is French Guyana, the situation is getting bad.
A group of protestants emerged a few days ago, requesting France and Europe to act against violence in French Guyana and tryed to reach the Jupiter Room (Space center, Launch control room) by force, as the Space Center is a "direct link" to Europe. As they failed, they locked all road with Trucks, trashs etc, they forced small markets to close. Army set a special Helicopter transport for Space Center workers (all the day we can hears the rotation) to ensure the launch later today (delayed from Monday) and the Sensible area protection.

In the today local news:
Schools are now Closed
Super market and fuel pump will close tomorrow
Container ship diverted
Air France 852 (Paris-Cayenne) get back to Paris after 4H in-flight)
Air Caraibes 570 (Paris-Cayenne) diverted to Guadeloupe
Azul (Cayenne-Belem) and Air France to the Caraibes assured for Today
Airport is half-closed (for now)
Socials conflicts in some places
People have to leave their cars to go through the barrages (people are presently walking to the Airport, and for most of them, theirs flights are to Paris (no flights, but they don't know)

We are actually unable to leave: Towns entrances roads are closed, Airport is half-inoperative.

There are no way to leave the country.

I hope you will understand why I post this message, I just want to share my situation to feel less scared.
Its actually a Social Crisis, no one know how it can turn as protestants leaders said it will get worser if nothing changes

Thats actually all I know...

Regards

Wow, I'm sorry for you and your people, loved ones, friends etc. Can people get to their places of employment? Food and supplies available? In better times, is your society a place with free speach and free press? Sorry to be ignorant of your world. Planning to start reading about French Guyana.

I'm feeling scared also, here in the USA, as authoritarianism is somehow becoming chic, while Russia appears to silently attacking. I was recently musing on losing freedom, and then thinking about how un-earned everything seems to be. Some folks live under dictatorships, not because they were weak, or "deserving", but simply because they happened to be born in Cuba, or North Korea, or Russia. I didn't earn the freedoms I've enjoyed up to now, as I was just born here. (still the onus of losing freedom is daunting)

But, I also acknowledge how different it will feel when the civil unrest reaches the stage you describe. The story you tell is the nightmare I suspect has been shared by people in many places.

Marc, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Had you not written the above, I would never have known that you actually live there rather than mainland France...

@bob5568 thanks you for your message. Only the Space center workers have to work, as the Rocket propellant is created here, they need to maintain all system working to avoid overheat or what ever else (I actualy did an intership at the Propellant Factory), they reach places via helicopter.
As planes and Container ships diverted, we will be limited (the potestents actually did thats to force everyone to reach their movement)
In better time, well, not sure about free speech and press, there are a lot of thing that are not said....(only yesterday, we first heard about this movementn started 3 weeks ago)

I also know how its going around the world, and in many cases, small social crises end up with civil wars, thats why Im scared, as we are unable to leave, its worser, as the Space center and its workers are basd in Kourou (where I live), army is "protecting" the town.
Actually, the "movemment" started 3 weeks ago, but media started to talk about it only yesteray after thes locked roads and tried to enter the Space Center by force.
And today, they announced to lock others roads, close markets, fuelpump, Airport is half closed (for now) and no cargo ship.

As I said, no way to Leave, I feel like being an hostage...

@n4gix Thank you for your prayers, and no, I don't live in mainland France

Actually, I don't wanted to write a message about the situation... because its was only a question of barages at first, and I know there are worser situation in this world...but with nes events, I wanted to talk...

Thank you very much for your support my friends :)

I'm sure Arno welcomes this thread, so I'd not feel concerned about raising it. For members of any tribe, sharing feelings among people you've worked with is fairly safe, and if it helps feel less like a hostage, its well worth it. Developers are people first, craft second.
Best

Marc, hang in there. I hope all the unrest is peacefully resolved very soon. I'm amazed by the lack of press coverage, seem twitter's the only way to see what's going on (and also fsdeveloper.com, my primary source of world news :))

Thanks for your kind words :)
me too, Im shocked...., even in France news, nothing (I was on skype with a good friend, conversation started well, then I told him, he felt very bad, he was'nt aware of the situation, he first though that I was joking... I had to show him local news videos)

Only "Guyane 1ere" (local news) and FSDeveloper.com know more than others countries (even France Mainland)
As you, my source of Worls News is FSDev :) )

I live in Argentina and I can't find nothing on the main newspapers websites. I'll check CNN

Marc should probably check in periodically so people don't worry too much..

France media started today.
Its good that sowewhere some start to care about it (they must have checked FSDeveloper )

-About the 2 Long Hauls aircafts (Paris-Cayenne), they diverted because there are not fire protection due to stoppages, only the Medium haul to Martinique (A320) still operate so the airport won't close, but roads still locked
-Foreign media started to talk about it (as @bob5568 said) but only a few if them.
-Markets, Schools, Fuel Pumps are now closed, only pharmacy will remain open. They closed every commerces only to force people to joint thew on the barrages, I personalyy won't join them, I know FG, each time there is a manifestation, it turn bad (French Guyana is in "Red" about Violences, I generally never leave my house, I got some Agoraphobia because of that...)
-Ariane 5 won't be launched until the end of the manifestation because of stoppages (the Company that is supposed to move Ariane 5 from Assebly building to the launch pad, the rocket actualy never left the Assembly Building)

Today, its looks like a normal day, I will continue living normally, flying, messing around on blender, watching videos etc, but inside me, I know that the social situation is "extremely tense". Thuesday, negociation will start.

The Cancelled Ariane V launch is the only preoccupation of France and Europe, thats what they start to talk about French Guyana.
Its good that you found an English new about it.

For now, we don't worry that much, this is whats next that scares me, Manifestant leaders said they will become more persuasive (creshendo) and I dont know what they could do as they already "took if hostages" the whole country (thats actually what we feel)

EDIT

They want Helicopter rotation to the space center to stop as they are considering that is a way to pass through the barrages a,d they don't like that (they don't understand thats Space Center need permanant maintenance)
They axtended the barrage at Kourou to lock the road to Sinamary, the sawmill etc
France news said something about it (but only the "why")
Some barrages are set up illegally (people at those barrages are racketeering automobilists, so they are demanteled by police and "official Manifestants".

BTW, Forget about the Civil war allusion I did yesterday, its only a Social unrest for now.
We hope it will get better soon...

Marc

To Moderators: First of all, I apologize about this thread, if there is something you don't like, please feel free to edit or delete the comments.

Okay....
its getting worser :(

-2 Cargo ships left Degrad des Cannes with full containers
-Container with fresh products can't be deliverd and remain in the Port
-Airport is functional, but Flights are cancelled (and people are actually sleeping on the airport terminal)
-New Barrages
-Wild Barrages (young people (10-15Yo) taking advantage of the situation to stop automobilist to racket them and damages/destroy their cars)
-Others young people taking advantage to robble small markets, aggress people and making chaos (new violences)
-By Taking advantage, New groups emerged (differents than the anti-violence one) with "absurds" revendications (they are illegally on the territory and request to be located) actually, those revendication can't be accepted by the government, and so, there are risks that manifestations remains...

Tomorrow, the supermarket in our town will be open a few houres (to end up the stock I guess), we will make provision because be are losing the hope of a soon recovery; even people I now who though that it would end after negociation are now preparing the list of what to buy tomorrow (only after hearing about new groups, new revendications...)

To explain the situation:
If government accept the initial revendication (about acting against violence), the others groups will increase their manifestations to get their revendications accepted too... which is not possible...

About foreign countries:
Some are starting getting news, but Im sure that media don't say everything
Washington (USA) asked to their people to not go in French Guyana: http://www.europe1.fr/societe/washington-deconseille-aux-americains-de-se-rendre-en-guyane-3194771
