• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX:SE Transparency issue with objects behind

Hi,

I'm facing a well known issue with transparency : other objects (and airplanes) behind my transparent object doesn't show.

I work on Blender and the great MCX.
There are a lot of topics dealing with that, talking about setting parameters in MCX
http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/transparent-windows.433225/

I'm asking here because I didn't success in finding a way to solve that. I have tried a lot of different settings, starting with "set default transparent", then adjusting the alpha test level without success. Trying setting from other scenery which are working but not for my objects.

I try to set my transparent object parameters, but should I try to set my non tranparent objects which are disappearing behind ?

Is there a magical trick which could resolve that ?
Do you have any ideas ? I'm sure alost everyone was one day facing this issue.

Many thanks !

I think you'd need to be more precise about the nature of your model. For example, I sometimes have a problem with transparent canopies, or cockpit windows, that appear to "bore a hole" through the rest of the model; such that the remainder of the model, when viewed through the transparency, is invisible. The effect is similar to this, although it is an image I found using Google:

fbo-1.1.jpg

This model artist has chosen to create the handrail using a transparent image with the spindles added in opaque color. His solution would be similar to mine, in that we would compile the two model types, transparent and opaque, separately. With MCX, I will import the parts intended to be transparent and define the material attribute using the preset drop-down as "set default transparent." This is really the core of the solution, the remaining steps are ancillary. I next import the remainder of the model and define material attributes as "set default opaque." This insures shadows and light effects are rendered properly over this portion or the model. Then I use the combine tool of MCX to merge to two sub models, adjust additional attributes, compile and to borrow a term, voila, it is done.

Perhaps your problem is similar and this can serve as a solution.

Thank you for your answer =rk=, I already have seen this topic.

I didn't tried this method so far because my issue is not totally similar.

Here is what I have :

transparency_issue.png

1) A blast fence with a semi transparent DXT5 texture on this side
2) The semi transparent texture is working perfectly on the same object
3) For the other objects, it's more difficult : modeled building are not visible trought my blast fence, as airplanes. Some autogen is still visible as we can see on the previous post.

Final mysterious case : when I place multiple same blast fence model, the transparency is working through all of them, so the transparency is working for some models but not for another...

I can try the method which consists in separating opaque and transparent parts of the model and then merge them in MCX. However I am posting here because I know that it can work with only one material. It works for other sceneries. I tried the same setting as another working scenery without success.

Well, at this point I don't know what's wrong, but for sure FSX is unpredictable.

Thank you all :)

Ok, another solution that may prevent you having to recompile every model that is within view of this blast fence. You say you have a transparent texture applied with opaque sections to represent framing or mesh or whatever, correct? Please create a new version of this blast fence, but on this occasion, texture only one face, allowing the other to remain default transparent, as opposed to textured semi-transparent. With only a few limited examples of my own work to compare to, on every occasion that this condition was established, when tested, the model rendered transparent sections as intended and opaque sections as expected, without editing material attributes. In my developing experience, the problem arises when one applies material texture to the face behind the one through which one is looking.

Thank you =rk=
I tried a huge amount of things and this is where I am on my researches :

- I am working on a single plane
- The fully transparent texture is working : I can see everything behind
- The semi transparent texture hide everything behind unless autogen

I don't think that it can be relevant to recompile all the other objects because :
-> I put a blast fence from another scenery on mine and it is working
-> I put the another scenery's blast fence texture on my plane and the exact same MCX parameters, and it doesn't works

Well, I don't know if the problem comes with a wrong setting in Blender or MCX now...

No more results with other experimentations.

Are there some Blender users who success in modeling with semi transparency here ?

Have you took a look to the wiki http://vps-8048-2348.cloud.tilaa.co...wing_order_problems_with_transparent_textures
if you want to learn a Little of theory:confused:
Search in the net "fsdeveloper transparencies issues" you will find a lot of exemples with similar problems. not search in the site "search box" it is unprobable it show some result. very bad the site searcher.
And sorry no to be of too much help. it's a common issue here but not a clear answer for such problems. I always recommend to change the settings in the alpha test to "greater" it always solve the problem. but mine were very simple transparencies issues.
