• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Transparency problems

I have scoured these forums for information on how to create transparent textures for FSX but still cannot make them work, hope some one can help.

I use DXTBmp to create the alpha channel and when I press the "preview" button, the image looks as it should, all the black becomes transparent and the areas I want to be visible are shown.

However, no matter what format I save it in, I cannot get the thing to work in the sim. There are many options and I must have tried them all but to no avail.

I have also tried to find the tutorial about creating transparent images but it does not appear to be available. Could someone explain the correct steps when using DXTBmp to produce transparent images?

Thanks in advance

Colin

Hi Colin,

Just adding an alpha channel to the texture does not mean that it becomes transparent in FSX by default. You need to change the object itself as well to make sure the alpha channel is used.

I really hate to askthe question Arno, but how do you do that? (I use Gmax to produce the mdl).

Hi Colin,

In GMax, go to the material editor. I hope you made your materials as FSX materials already. Then browse down in the material settings till you reach the "Set Default Transparent" button. That's the one you need to press to use the alpha channel.

good evening Arno,

Thank you for your advice, I have found this "set transparency" button and I think that the model was not properly set to FSX materials. It is being a very long learning curve but hopefully I can now finish my project.

Thanks again

Colin
