• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

trouble with contact points

Hi all,

When I stsrt FS in the paused position looking at the outside of the aircraft
the wheels are slightly below ground level, then when I unpause the sim they jump up to be at ground level .I have tried messing with static cog and also tried messing with the static compression but to no avail?

Help appreciated please.

Yes I tried that but then I end up with the aircraft dropping down onto the contact point. I have just loaded up the default Baron and that does it a
bit too. It's no big deal, just looks a bit odd. I guess it's something to do with the suspension not "starting up" until after the pause is released.

Static compression is only 0.3 feet - that's not even 4 inches. Increase static height a little, but starting the sim paused is undoubtedly the biggest part of the problem.

Any version of FS you care to mention positions the model's centre with reference to the static height and pitch, then physics and geometry take over. Start paused and you postpone the physics and geometry.

Make the static height too large and the model drops from a height on to the runway - you can break it this way! On the other hand if static height is too small the model might surface like a breaching whale, or 'mole' where it settles on to other contact points.
Then there are all sorts of odd effects when the model teeters on incorrect scrape points while the undercarriage tries to settle it - difficult to reproduce unless you're just entering trial values without understanding what to do! :o
 
Consider static_pitch, too, which you have at 0.0 - very few birds sit straight like that.

Edit: Also, you can easily test the sit of your mdl by hitting and releasing Slew mode. A slight adjustment movement is perfectly OK, usually the front gear will be slightly above ground in Slew.

I found that using the 'SLEW' method works well. When in 'SLEW' I'll see where the model is sitting, and how far it drops or 'pops up' when unslewed.
Then adjustments in the COG height, and the pitch come into play to minimize or eliminate the drop or pop up. Sometimes I find I mess it up or something, then you can always cheat a bit and move the points themselves if the gear bottom points don't sit properly on the tarmac. This results in the points not sitting exactly at the wheel or pad bottom, but it looks right in-sim.
I just hack my way through this stuff though. Best of luck to ya.
