• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Tutorials for Game/Sim assets

Hello.

I was wonderig if anyone knows some good tutorials on creation of 3d-assets for Sims, or probably games.

THe problem i have is this: im about to learn those things atm and was doing around 6 or 7 tutorials that took me over 20 hours to complete. Sadly nearly every Blender Tutorial doesnt care about how the objects work in game or sim environments and im afraid that 20h are nearly fully wasted time. Another 20 hours or more ive spent doing tutorials, split in multiple parts, where one finds out after 5h spent that it works completely different in another Blender version, cant find the menus due to that or where the autor goes so fast that one cant catch up anymore, without answering questions about some steps.

Most of the time they only create stuff that looks good in a certain angle, with tons of polys and tricks that will probably never work in MSFS, for example. Due to health reasons i cannot go through an endless amount of tutorials that wont help my any step further to create MSFS stuff.
Im aware it will take a long time to learn whats needed anyway but i would love to spend this time learning things that will work for the Sims. Better said, im simply not able to spent too much time per day and the time i can spend should be worth it.

So my question is, does anyone remember good Blender 2.8+ Tutorials where one can learn something about things that will work for our SIms?

I went through most beginner tutorials already, like mentioned.

Would be amazing, thank you!

There is a tutorial series i personally really enjoyed -

Maybe scroll through these videos and see if you can pick up some info that might help you get started ?

Thank you very much. Forgot about these already.

Sadly hes using the old Blender, 2.79. What probably gives me again some trouble doing the things then in 2.8+ or even 2.9.

But i will go through them, thank you.

Still, if someone else has something in mind dont hesitate to add some to the list here ^^ I bet it would not only help me but also some other newcomers.

Lerning the basics of blender is never a waste of time. It is the fundamental thing of 3d modeling. If you know this it is way easy to learn how it is working in the game engine.

And blender or 3d modeling is a thing for years or 10 - 20 years. Or even a lifetime :) . So 20 to 40 hours will be nothing if you start doing this kind of stuff.

But do it it is well spent time!

I expected this to be coming and i understand what your saying :)

The problem is that im afraid it will continue like this for the next 20 tutorials. and i will still not be able to do some things for the sim. I had mentioned that i cannot sit there and waisting much time due to health reasons.

80% of tutorials i found work in a way where things stand out in the back or out of camera angles, have texturing methods that wont work in the sim and all those things that wont help me. I dont want to be the next 3D modeling guru, i want to make simple airports and objects for MSFS :)

Its simple, i would prefer to learn by doing the stuff that is working for the sim. Starting easy things and build on that to be able to make a good airport in a few years.

I hope this is somewhat understandable. The tut series mentioned above from Bill Womak is the perfect example of what i mean. Its focusing on the things i would need and not on learning 1000 shader nodes where only a small percentage is usable for the things i want. Nor on sculpting or camera angles or all those ballast.

If you would have 1 h per day where you can concentrate, i bet you would like to spend this hour in a way that makes the most sense.

It sounds like you are talking yourself out of trying. There is no perfect tutorial. MSFS is too new and things are changing fast...both in terms of tools and the simulator itself. So, you need to jump in with patience and make use of the tutorials available.

When MSFS was released, I was where you were. I learned a lot by following along with Bill. The hangar he constructs in the tutorials is 100% applicable to MSFS until it is time to export to MSFS. Texturing techniques have evolved but the technique he uses is still applicable And I see a lot of people on this forum still use his approach. I followed along with Blender 2.9 and it required me to jump into a few other Blender-specific tutorials to understand the differences between 2.79 and 2.9. Flying Theston and BennyBoy444’s Tutorials helped fill in some of the MSFS SDK. These forums (and Microsoft’s forums) have been helpful to fill in other blanks. Finally, good of’ fashion trial and error has solved more problems that have not gotten answered.

The first step to your first airport is to get started.

I dont think everyone understand what im trying to say but thats fine, i can understand that because most dont "sit" in my body and have to deal with what i have to deal with.

But whats the bigger problem than the health related thing is that so many "tutorials" are from ppl who only want to show off instead to teach. Where nothing gets explained and they talk in lighting speed. Just coming from one of those. Where the end is always the same, i finish the object somehow but learned nothing about the tools ive just used and why ive used them. So after a week you have 10 objects and still couldnt produce one that has another form or something by own hand. Im just tired of that. Maybe my yt shows me different stuffcompared to others but somehow i end up with such ones always.

I wish they would have the tag "Showing of my skills" instead of "Tutorial" but that will stay wishful thinking im afraid. That Bill Womak series seems to be a 1-time happening in all of the tutorials of this kind.

Anyway, thanks for the mentioned names, i will look further into them. Flying Theston i know yep, he teached me how to bring the stuff over to msfs for example. Pretty informative.

Thanks guys.

I think Im ok now. But of course you can still add here. I will add some that helped me a lot too, for others with the same starting problems.

I learned a lot since I made this topic, from this forum too.

But now I'm nearly done with modeling the main buildings from my airfield i create. Some smaller objects and some texturing things and I'm.done with it.

Even got invited into a dev team here, after showing my project here in the showroom :-)

All is going well. Thank you again!
