• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Two Questions

Hey everyone,

First question: I am not having any luck in getting night textures to show up in FSX. I found another thread saying that you must map your nigh texture in GMAX using the the 'Self Illumination' channel in the Maps roll-out.

Ok, I've done that but still no night texture in FSX. The texture file is just a regular bitmap, no alpha channel. I had originally mapped it in the "Ambient" slot (so now it is mapped in two places). Should I remove the ambient mapping completely (and how do I do that)? Is there anything else I should be aware of in order for night textures to show up?

Second Question: My object is pointing in the wrong direction in FSX. In my XML file, I changed the heading from '0' to '355' but it had no effect. I am I missing something else? ..Hmm, I just looked at a different example. Does the heading need a decimal point (355.00)?

Thanks.

-Michael

Hi Michael,

Yes, your heading should be given with a dot, you can not use a comma in the number. But only giving a value of 355 should also work. Are you sure that you recompiled the XML after you made that change and loaded the new BGL?

For the night texture, all you have to do is add the name of the night texture in the self illumination slot. You don't have to remove the ambient texture, as that is your daytime texture. If you then export your MDL again you should see the night texture with all other FsX Material settings left to default.

Thanks for replying, Arno.

I figured out what was wrong. I was using a "standard" texture in GMax instead of an FSX Texture. Once I changed my night bitmap to an FSX material, it showed up in the Sim.

I also got the object pointing in the right direction by changing the heading to "155.00" (180 degrees opposite of 355.00) so, It must have had something to do with the way the object was oriented in Gmax. Not sure what I did wrong.

By the way, what is the trick to refreshing the scenery in FSX without restarting?

Thanks!

-Michael

Hi Michael,

By the way, what is the trick to refreshing the scenery in FSX without restarting?

If you go to the keyboard settings (where you can map the keys to certain actions), you will see there is also a "Refresh scenery" action you can attach a key to. That will reload the scenery.

But, when FsX is running, most BGL files are locked. That means you can not replace them with newer versions at that moment. So I still quit most of the time.
