• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

unable to setup sdk

Hi Folks

I do not have a menu appearing in or out of flight when I press alt

Jimbobd -
In Vista, to see fsx.CFG
you'll need to tick "Show Hidden Files".

If you have no menu,
however do you know the 'Tools' entry is missing ? :D

Seriously though -
where were you expecting the 'Tools' entry to appear ?
Someone recently expected it to appear in the GUI, (where you select your flight).

The menu is the bar along the upper edge of the FSX in-flight window.

[Flights] [Aircraft] [World] [Options] etc.

Can you see that ?

The 'Tools' entry should display as one of the rightmost options.

I have no idea where you mean
Is it while I'm in a free flight?
or on the free flight page setup page?
or in the settings page?

Hi Folks

Jimbobd -
The menu is the bar along the upper edge of the FSX in-flight window.

[Flights] [Aircraft] [World] [Options] etc.

i.e.
While you are flying in either free-flight or in a mission.

I have changed the fsx.cfg file
Please explain what you mean.

Please open your fsx.cfg in a text editor.

Look for the [Trusted] section
find the 3 tools entries,
these may appear multiple times, (one for each SDK version).

These are the entries for mine.

Code:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\Object_Placement.dll.LONGSTRING=1
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll.LONGSTRING=1
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Special Effects SDK\visualfxtool.dll.LONGSTRING=1

Where LONGSTRING is a 'meaningless' alphanumeric string.
The final value should be =1

Is it ?
If not, change it to 1.

Fire up FSX.
Do the tools now display ?
Any answer on this ?

Hi Folks

Jimbobd -
Press the alt key just as if typing,
holding the key down hides the menu.

1) Does the menu now show ?
2) Is there a 'Tools' option towards the right ?

If the menu still doesn't show -

In the GUI, (before you start flying),
on the main menu (LH side)
click 'Settings'.

The bottom RH button
should say 'Reset Defaults'
Click it.

Now start a flight.
3) Does the in-game menu now show ?
4) Is there a 'Tools' option towards the right ?

Hi Folks

that reset defaults is just for display options
Jimbobd -
That's why we were trying it,
to see if you'd set your sliders too high,
and had exhausted your system's resources.

Go in there again,
and set ALL sliders fully to the left,
including the FPS and screen res.

Check again for the menu.

EDIT
The previously asked, [Trusted] question,
do the paths in fsx.CFG
match those for both
a) your dll.XML
b) your SDK

Hi Folks

Jimbobd -
Try right clicking on the window,
does any context menu display then ?

Please also ensure you answer all the questions asked.
See those in my previous post.

EDIT
Possibly related -
Have you diabled Vista Glass and Aero features
as per FSX installation instructions ?

If not,
then do so.
Does the menu now appear ?

the links are the same and my os autmatically changes to vista basic when fsx starts. I tried right clicking but nothing appears

Hi Folks

jimbobd -
In the FSX GUI
Settings page
Click the General button, (RHS).
Tick 'Enable Captioning'

Now fly the first tutorial mission.
As the voiceover talks
you should see the equivalent text
displayed in a small block on the LHS.

1) Do any blocks of text appear ?

All the following are for in free-flight, (not mission).

Press the ' key.
2) Does the ATC menu appear ?

Press the SHIFT+F10 keys.
3) Does the Kneeboard appear ?

Press the SHIFT+3 keys.
4) Does the GPS appear ?

Hi Folks

Jimbobd -
Ok.

1, 2, & 3, confirm that your card
is drawing semi-trans overlays,
and AFAIK,
Glass & Aero are not affecting,
(may still be wrong here).

Open your fsx.CFG
Find the [Main] section.
Set these variables to the values below.

[Main]
HideMenuNormal=0
HideMenuFullscreen=0
Maximized=1

EDIT - Applied correct values above.

Now launch FSX.
In the GUI
set your screen res to 1024x768.
(irrelevant of your physical screen res).

Now fire up a flight.
It should now be in fullscreen mode,
and have forced the menu to display.

Does the menu display ?

Please post your video card type & specs.

Paul,

Am I thinking about this backward or shouldn't these .cfg file entries be set to "0" (False)?

Main]
HideMenuNormal=0 (i.e. not hidden)
HideMenuFullscreen=0
Maximized=1

jimbobd,

It seems like something very subtle is wrong and at this rate it may take forever to figure out. It also may have nothing to do with the SDK installation.

There are two slightly more drastic things I can suggest but they are just a shot in the dark.

1) Completely delete your FSX.cfg file. Restart the sim and
it will automatically rebuild a new one. See if you then
have a menu bar.

..but before you do that, can someone confirm that its safe to delete both copies? (One in the main FSX folder and one in the Application Data folder)

or...

2) Run set-up agian from the installation DVD and select the
repair option.
