• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Unstable autopilot

I'd like to make the autopilot more stable. During turns it tends to lose altitude very quickly, reaching a "vs" of at least -1200.
To return to the set altitude go up with very high "vs" breaking through the altitude and so on. I wish he had a more muted behavior is accurate. Do I have to act on the .air file? What values should I play with?
 
The autopilot behaviour is controlled from the [autopilot] section of the aircraft.cfg. It has a PID controller which stands for proportional integrator and derivative. For these three terms there are control scalars and boundaries. Before you adjust anything I would recommend doing a little bit of reading about PID.
I would also recommending doing nothing to the air file unless it is so bad that stabilised flight on the autopilot proves to be impossible.

The flight model is critical to proper autopilot action. Anything relating to stability needs to be reviewed and adjusted.

Do you have appropriate tools to view and adjust these?

The usual places to start are with the weight and balance, making sure it's within a reasonable range, usually 22-28% MAC.
Moments of Inertia need to be correct.
The aileron and elevator authority should not be excessive.
View sections 473 and 404 to make sure they are accurate and appropriate to the flight model.

All these files can be backed up and restored. There is no way to learn but to give things a try and note the results.
