• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Using aprons to remove grass; and use of different surfaces

I have a grass airfield I'm making, and the grass tufts the sim puts everywhere are just too tall, they look about knee height. So I've worked out I can place aprons down wherever I want the grass to be 'mowed' set their surface type to remove the tufts and set their transparency to 0 so the original Bing Maps texture shows through.

I've made a custom material so that I can set the surface to whatever I like.

The issue is that only Cement, Bituminous and Tarmac actually remove the grass tufts. There's SHORT_GRASS and ERASE_GRASS but they don't actually make any difference to the tufts (I'm guessing ERASE_GRASS is supposed to do exactly that so maybe it's a bug?)

What differences to the surfaces actually make, do they affect the aircrafts' ground handling? Also, if they are, is there anywhere these are defined so I can look and see which of the non-tuft surfaces are closest to grass?

I've read you can make a cement apron, then cover it with a grass apron, and the tufts disappear.

I just tested this, and it seems there's no effect on either handling, sound or vibrations.

Where exactly and under which name this type of grass can be found???I'm reffering to the tall grass look like is being uncut, not the mowed one.I searched all over the material editor and there wasn't a single material with even the slightest relevance with the pictured one. There are some places on our home airfield where the grass remain uncut and the one you show is exactly what it looks like.
Also where exactly are SHORT_GRASS and ERASE_GRASS?Under which material group?
Many thanks!

That's just what showed up - I think the sim decides what grass to generate based on the biome and the colour of the ground texture - there's a few places where the ground texture is more brown where less grass appears.

...Frankly that's what crossed my mind in the first place but I was hoping it might be otherwise and we would have an option to it.Here in Greece there's no place with such a grass type in the sim.Maybe we could have some kind of authority using "biom override"?
Concerning the two grass types you said and asked you about?

I would definitely like to know in which way and how could work!!!
Maybe a tutorial on the subject would be a great idea. It's quite unclear how this feature supposed to work.I wonder if it's applicable to grass and general default vegetation type or it's intended for forests only.
