• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Using the XToMdl

Hi!
It's been some months now, I am trying to make an .mdl
I am using Windows Vista greek 32bit.
I have manage to make the shortcut ComplineAircraft work!

It uses this path:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /K C:\Plugins\xtomdl.exe /XANIM /DICT:C:\Plugins\modeldef.XML > buildlog.txt

The shortcut and the .X file are located also in 'C:\Plugins' folder.

When I run it, I give this order:
>xtomdl spitfire_mkV.X
My problem is that the spitfire_mkV.X is not been Indentified...
Please any ideas?

I don't see anything in your shortcut (or is that an alias or a .CMD file) that passes the filename into the actual XTOMDL.EXE command line. Try just running this from a command prompt:

Code:
C:\Plugins\xtomdl.exe /XANIM /DICT:C:\Plugins\modeldef.XML spitfire_mkV.X > buildlog.txt

Tim, that is a desktop shortcut that, if placed in the user's SendTo folder, will allow one to simply right-click on the nnn.X file and choose Compile Aircraft from the popup menu.

This method allows one to have the nnn.X file anywhere they want, and compiled file will be saved in the same folder as the source file.

Alternatively, one could simply drag-n-drop the nnn.X file on top of the shortcut.

Yes. The shortcut must be placed in your SendTo folder, as the Wiki article instructs:

Hi n4gix,

Well at the moment I am using windows XP and place the shortcut into sendto folder. Then I change the international windows settings to US.
But the .mdl is still created with zero size...
Here is the error:
Found dictionary file: C:\Plugins\modeldef.XML
OutputFile: C:\Plugins\spitfire_mkV.MDL
Output file after modification: C:\Plugins\spitfire_mkV.MDL
Creating output MDL file: C:\Plugins\spitfire_mkV.MDL
error : Error loading .X file: (C:\Plugins\spitfire_mkV.x). Is it a valid FLIGHT SIMULATOR '.X' file?

It works!!!:)
My .X is corrupted?

Well, yes your X file is corrupted. Try exporting a simple cube to see if the X file is valid and will compile to a .mdl file.

How did you create your X file in the first place? Looks indeed like it is corrupt.

I use the verify tool and I got this message "As far as I can tell, this model is perfect!"
Then I exported it as .X file. But I remember that I didn't check nearly all the choices such as export FSX Material and Animations:confused:

That sounds OK to me.

With the same error message?

Could you check what your decimal character is set to in the Windows settings? The modelling tools require that the decimal character is the dot, while in many countries the comma is the default setting.
