• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Vanishing Aircraft

Howdy All ----

Well I have been putting together my varied fleet of AI aircraft using AIFP. I recently picked up a model of two large cargo planes, both of which were set up in the aircraft.cfg file for AI usage.

Both of these planes are not FSX originals. But I have a number of FS9 planes running under AI that work just fine. These do not --- after being on the runway after landing for about ten seconds, THEY VANISH!!!

Am I possibly missing something in the aircraft.cfg file that needs to be there? I have compared the files with other aircraft that work just fine from FS9 vintage and they are the same. Maybe it is just in the model itself??

Any AI veterans out there that have seen this vanishing act, and have any clues?? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks --- Bob --- :D

You don't have enough parking available for the planes.

If thats not the problem I dont know...

If the AI doesn't exit the runway, that means there's no SUITABLE parking available. Since, they are large cargo aircraft, they will need large parking spots.

Also, be aware that FS9 and FSX use different methods for assigning parking. FS9 uses the model radius stored in the .mdl file; FSX uses the wingspan stored in the aircraft.cfg file. If those two parameters are different, it's possible for the parking to be adequate in say, FS9, and not adequate in FSX or vice versa, even though the exact same afcad is used for both.

Look in the cfg file for a parking type, and install a few of those at your airport. If this is a stock airport, most larger ones have some Gate Heavy spots that should park your gargo planes ,just to see if the planes work. That is , unless they are full. Other than that, put some Ramp Gargo spots in. They are larger than spots a 777 needs to park in. Other AI work at this airport?

Mystery Solved

Well Gentlemen -- you collectively solved the issue for my newbie mystery. I had installed some larger parking pads which I thought would handle my big boys (A380 and big Ilyushins) but not so. I did not know about the exact metrics that FSX was using to make determinations. Those were the two planes that vanished after figuring out there was no space for them that was large enough. Even the A380 just barely fits the largest pad available in ADE :o

Well, all is working nicely now and I have provided plenty of space for my big UPS fleet.

Many Thanks as usual -- Bob --- :D

You can make parking spots any size you want. In fact it is best to taylor spots. For example; lets say you have an F-16 parked in a Military Commbat spot. Those spots by default are huge. The fuel truck will stop very far away. If you lower the size of the spot based of wing span (normaly 7m for an F-16), than the fuel truck will park very close. Plus you'll have more room in general.

If I may so - maybe a good chance to point to the AI-Editor, currently beta-tested in the ADE forum ;)

It was the main purpose for writing this tool to keep the overview while working with your preferred airport design editor and tailoring parking spots. All other functionality was added later.

Hello All -- yes, the size editing of the parking areas is on my list -- a great feature of ADE as well. Many are on the large side and once I get my fleet set, I can tweak those in. I have not tried the AI Editor yet, but will give that a shot shortly. So many great tools to work with.

It was great to see the monster A380 land and taxi. One of my next challenges is placing loading ramps for commercial jets and some for my cargo fleet. So many features to learn but that is what makes working with FSX fun and challenging.

Thanks again for the support and help --- Bob --- :)
