• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 VANS RV-12

Hi,

I'm creating my first Flight sim aircraft (been a long (very long) slog learning everything). I've posted a couple of videos so I can get some feedback on it to see what I have done right and what I've done wrong and should redo. this has been by first time doing any blender, msfs, textures etc so any tips would be great

I built one IRL (the older RV-12, not the newer RV-12is model) so I have based it on that with the UK/EU avionics. This is normally Dynon Screen but I couldn't find one of those to use so had to go with the Garmin. It also has the 225 radio you get with the avionics kit which is bigger than the US version so there is no room for the autopilot panel (the radio is too tall). As I have not been able to get the DynonHDX display though I did consider changing it to match the US avionics kit instead as it now is using that screen anyway (ie change the radio and add the autopilot panel) but then it wouldn't be the one I wanted to build (ie the one I really built IRL) so not sure on that yet.

And a later one with the Garmin G3X display

A couple of points I learned along the way (for anyone else starting out).
1) don't go mad trying to reduce poly count on a small aircraft, compared to the large ones it is irrelevant. I now need to go back at some point and try to put more back in to get smoother lines :(
2) Blender will be frustrating to learn. So many ways of accidentally doing things and then spending hours trying to figure out how to undo them using features you don't know about yet. Save often and reload is normally quicker.
3) Trying to learn the MSFS system is hard and feels unwieldy. It can take a lot of time to figure out how to do/fix something

It is a long-term project and I keep coming back to it to add improvements. Currently, it flies within the general parameters of the RV-12 although I still haven't got it completely tuned (the stalling isn't quite the same) and the ground handling seems hard to configure (the RV-12 pulls to the left hard if you go full throttle, on soft grass it can be interesting to get the initial roll going as you need so much right brake due to the castering nosewheel it feels like you can't get it moving lol)

V3 released.
Just a small update to the panel (removed the manifold pressure gauge as it shouldn't really be there for an RV-12 :P).

I have sent an email to everyone on the podia list with the update (let me know if you didn't receive the email)

Happy flying

Hi, I’m new to this site. Is your RV-12 available to download ? THX Rob

Sorry for the delay but I didn't see the email regarding your reply. My Apologies.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links on here or not but there is a link in the video description in the first post I made.

I'm currently working on a Garmin S3X version. Although as I don't have an RV anymore (and it had the Dynon in it) I don't have much to go on as far as the standard VANS layout of the screen. If anyone has a real RV12 with the G3X in it and can post/send me photos of how the screen is configured I'd appreciate it. (ie the standard screen has Manifold pressure on it which isn't used in the RV12).

I will try and come up with something that looks similar to some general S3X photos I have seen and tune that to the RV12 (or what I think VANS would modify it to look like) and send that out to the emails of people who already have the current one. In future there will be two versions in the package. One with the AS3X touch and the newer one with the Working Groups G3X which seems much more feature rich.

Just to let you know I have updated the RV12 to use the Garmin S3X screen. I have sent an update link to anyone who purchased it with the new software but some of the emails bounced back so please check your email settings on the site to make sure they are up to date.

Just done another update so it is now duel G3X screens and fixed some handling issues. I still can't get the p-factor on take off working right though (with the castering nose wheel).

It should be pulling left, needing full rudder for a lot of the take off run and some right brake at the start of the run. If I increase the p-factor in game to the the right result then it just rolls over when it gets airborne.

If anyone knows how to simulate ground p-factor I'd love to know how you do it :D

I have a friend who just moved to Dynon on his RV-7 can send over layout shot for his panel. I've seen a few different configs on different builds, but should give a rough idea of a Vans layout. I'm currently in Australia so don't have access to his aircraft but Dynon do have a bunch of training videos on youtube for familiarization (wish they had a simulator)

I used to have the Dynon in my RV-12 but sadly there isn't one in MSFS. To create one is a lot of work (talking more about a compony with several employees who know what they are doing and a few months :D).. So sadly unless there is someone out there willing to put a lot of time into creating one then I don't see it happening in MSFS :(
I'm really surprised Dynon hasn't add it themselves (as they have all the stuff and just need to rewrite it for MSFS so it would be much faster). The best thing about the Dynon is the maps, I really loved the maps they used compared to other Displays. actually the best maps I found for GA aviation are in something called SkyDemon but given how much time and effort is involved in producing them they won't be giving them out for free anytime soon (and I can't blame them).
The Dynon training videos from Oshkosh are a great watch for anyone with one in their aircraft. Some really nice features.
BTW someone did a test flight on YT for it if anyone is interested.
