• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

What program is best for placing big city sections ?

Hi everybody !

After trying out Autogen-Annotator, gMax, TrueSpace, Poser, etc.
i want to build my hometown.
Thank god it is in the Aerosoft Real Germany 1 - Scenery ...
so i mustn t create photo tiles- all the tiles are there in 256x256 pixels in
very very good quality. :)

1. Question : Can i do bmp´s with 512 or 1024 pixels and use them instead of
these bmps ? ( Or can this size only be used with planes or objects ? I have a very good source for aerial photos - so parts of my town
would be incredible real.
2. Question : It would save a lot of time to use the tiles from Aerosoft as a
help for the positioning. I think some programs will accept a background bmp for scenerydesign. But what would you think best for this ?
i have gmax-objects and i want to use
the standard objects for the inner regions of the city. All wider areas will be
ok with annotator and autogen.
Also building some little lakes would be great.
I think the tiles are each 1,2 qm .

Sigh - a lot of questions - but i think asking the right people with much
experience will be better than to be frustrated and waiste a lot of time.
:p
Thanks - Enzo ( Stuttgart , Germany )

I am pretty sure they placed the photos with the mesh techniques and in that case you can not use bigger textures. Or in fact you can use them, but FS will alway use the 256x256 mip, so it makes no sense to use bigger textures :).

You could try to use a tool like ObPlacer XML or Rwy12. Then you can just slew over the photos in FS and place your objects. For designing a city I think that is the easiest way.

Thanks Arno ,

too bad that bmps won t work this way ... sigh

I use the ObjPlacer XML already - a great tool !
- but i think i need the preview of the
standard buildings to see the roofs, colors , height , etc. for the
wider areas.

Perhaps i will use ScenGenX - because i think XML is the right way
to survive the next version of FS .. lol

I have read somewhere that ScenGenX can handle bmps as background
so i could put the buildings on the table :D

But for placing the Special gMax-Buildings i consider ObjPlacer XML as the
far best - gmax - export - place - compile - ready . Way cool !
At first view i thougt RWY is best - but to make librarys - preview pics blabla
is a bit too much work for some purposes.
That was my first start with the campfire and fire and smoke effect.
Too bad that the cloud-bug keeps the clouds from the background in the
foreground :banghead: ( last thread from me ).

Ok - thx - til next time -

Enzo
