• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Which tool?

I have been using a payware program called Flight Sim Architect by Doug Pouk to create my footie stadium scenery. The program lets you place API macro objects as well as .mdl objects exported from GMax as well as some other stuff, photo ground textures being one.
The trouble is, the program is so darned flakey its difficult to use. It crashes, the object and texture libraries generate duplicated entries and de-selecting one object to move to another is a real pain.
Are there any other programs out there that let you import and place both API macro objects and GMax .mdls?

And as a second question, can you place a group of mixed tree such that it looks like a small woods, (e.g. define a polygon and populate it with trees for example) without placing them individually?

Thanks in advance

Jeff

About the tree question,
Yes you can. With Scruffyduck's Library and Object Manager you can use the scenery maker and do many things such as make long fencelines accurately or place thousands of trees in an area at once! It's a great program and I thank him much for creating it.

Here is his site:

As for using MDLs, what I do is just take a MDL, convert it to a BGL file for use in EZ-Scenery. Or you can use LOM, once again, such a great program.

Hi Jeff,

I think SGX should also be able to handle both API macros and MDL files. But personally I don't like the user interface of it much. Since I am using the Fs2004 gamepack of GMax for my models (and thus the MDL files), I hardly ever use API macros anymore. So I use an object placer like ObPlacer XML to place my objects.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess I'll persevere with the tool I'm currently using until I've finished the project and then start afresh with something else.
Scruffyducks LOM and SM look really useful but I need to learn a bit more about libraries first.

I agree with the comment about APIs, but still find them useful as there are a few generic models around, e.g. cars, trees and so on in API format.

I've been making my own collection of cars, trucks and buses and have about 20 odd mdls thus far. Once I've got enough I'll discard the APIs.

Well, got to get back to my scenery, I have to create my own backdrops as I stupidly failed to realise that photo-textures made using Google Earth would be copyright and non-distributable :alert:
