• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I have exported a .mdl file from Gmax and added it to the Current Scenery Section in WhisPlacer. How do I make a thumbnail for the .mdl file so it shows up in WhisPlacer and in FSX? Are there any special options on the mdl export that I need to set? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

No, GMax has no way to make a thumbnail for you. Also the thumbnail is only used in WhisPlacer, it is not used by FSX itself.

You could place the object, go to it in FS, make a screenshot of that and turn that into a thumbnail image for future use.

Or another option would be to use my ModelConverterX tool that can load the MDL file and save a preview image from that to use as thumbnail.

OK. But I have another question. How do I take a simple box object from gmax and make it show up in FSX?

After a long struggle with getting gmax and FSX SDK working together, I have exported a simple box object from gmax to the MDL format. There are no Textures or Skins on the box object just a color.

How do I place it in Flight Sim so I can see it?

Thanks

Hi,

If you are using WhisPlacer already the simplest way is to do it with that tool. Add the MDL file as an object to the current scenery in the WhisPlacer library manager. After that you can place the object at a certain position and export to BGL.

Another option is to add the MDL to a library and import that library.

I did everything you told me to do and I still can't see the box in FSX.

Is there something that I'm doing wrong when I export the box object from Gmax?

It is just a simple green box object. Are there any other options that I should select when exporting to the MDL Format?

Its getting frustrating!!!!

Thanks

Did you apply a material on the box or just the standard colour GMax gives it? If that is the case try adding a FlightSimX material with the colour you want.

And of course be sure that you have put the final BGL in an active scenery folder.

:)Thanks for your input. I finally got the box to show up in FSX.

On another note, I really like WhisPlacer. It makes scenery design a lot easier.

Thanks alot

Yes it does (at least here on my PC :)).

This thread is a bit old but I thought id resurrect it ;)

Arno- Did you manage to get the live preview function working in Whisplacer and Vista?

I have Vista Home premium 64 bit and cant get it, nor FSX planner to connect!

Yes, it is working here on my Vista Ultimate. So it should be possible.

hmmm any tips?

Ive added both FSX and FSX Planner and Whisplacer to windows firewall exclusions. Tried different port settings. Tried with and without the simconnect.xml

If you have time can you post your settings? (i.e. if you have the simconnect present and where, if you are using the auto port settings or have defined them etc)

Cheers
