• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Wind Turbines

Well, I always place the wind turbines with ScenProc...
loading the shapefile, creating xmllibobjects (yes, P3D has a turbine model, but I don't now the guid at the moment), and export it as a bgl...
That work's perfect for me.

The only thing that remains is this:
The P3D wind turbine model is not able to turn into the wind. Therefore it must be placed according to the prevailing wind direction.

Great news -- I'll just figure out the process with ScenProc. I don't mind right now which direction it faces. Do you know if the height is scalable?

Searching the various SDK files... does anyone know where to find the proper GUID?

Hi again:

Load libraries into Arno's ModelConverterX (aka "MCX") and page through the entries; you can view the GUID by clicking on the 'documentation' icon for a current object.

PS: Have you seen this add-on which was 'purportedly ported' from FSX to P3D ?

...Yet another possibility for a lead on 3D models for which permission might be sought to use them:

Gary, I had already found -- and downloaded -- version 5.0 of Ray Porter's electric scenery add-on, which I used back in the FSX days. :)

I just hoped there is a way to inject accurate, update-able data from USGS data that I can eventually improve upon (customized 3d model with animations and different heights and styles) and also distribute. Mr. Porter hasn't posted anything that I can find more recently than two years ago and had mentioned he was in poor health, so I don't even know if he is still around. Plus, I like the confidence of knowing that I can easily exclude/replace stock scenery and revert to default settings without possibly bogging down the sim (which freeware scenery tended to in my experience).

Indeed; once one has placement source data, one can insert required GUID(s) for 3D model(s) into the proper field within the derived source data to be used by ScenProc. ;)

Thanks Gary! The website made it easy to locate the GUID I needed plus many many more that will come in handy! Now, to dig through the manual again and learn another Scenproc process and maybe some of these wind farms will bring Kansas to life!

I have a tremendous wind farm that near Edwards Air Force Base in southern California that drops my frames per second to that of a slideshow if I am looking at the turbines. I currently direct ScenProc to output the turbines to BGL, but I'd like to try exporting them into autogen, which is friendlier on frame rates.

Would it be advisable to create a nationwide scenery layer for wind turbines when I use another layer for vegetation and buildings from another scenery layer, or would the competing layers cancel out objects? And what would be the optimal way to split the AGN?

I'm not getting any windmills out of this script... could it be necessary to split the grid with "SplitGrid|AGN|*"?

Code:
ImportOGR|pathtoshapefile|*|*|NOREPROJ
#
SplitGrid|LOD5|*
#
#CreateXMLLibObj|*|{F21DB452-6D9D-424D-B608-A9C34C194CC1}|0|0|0|2
PointToPolygon|FTYPE="POINT"|1;1|0|String;TYPE|Turbine
CreateAGNLibObject|TYPE="Turbine"|{F21DB452-6D9D-424D-B608-A9C34C194CC1}
#
ExportAGN|P3D v2|pathtofolder

Also, I had varying scales for the wind turbines based on different heights from my source data. Since I am now trying autogen, is there a way to re-create the varying heights of windmills in this method?

Wrapping my mind around placing wind turbines as autogen instead of library objects due to massive wind farms absolutely hammering the frame rates... Can objects placed as autogen appear through default scenery, or does that only work with BGL turbines? Do I need to create an exclusion rectangle to make it "pop through?" Also, is "AGN" for SPLITGRID required in this case? Because doing all of the United States' windmills at once needs a LOT of tiles?

I've tried a lot of different ways to get the autogen windmills to appear, including making a 20x20 box (thinking the 1x1 wasn't big enough), but none have worked yet. Can you not have layers of autogen? My vegetation and buildings are in the same layer, but these windmills are in a layer above.
