• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Windsock

Hmmmm, I re-exported the Gmax files, then used MDL Tweaker (the condition) set wind velocity as per previous, then renamed the 'tweaked' MDL files. Still no joy, I only get the Medium to show, I can change wind but nothing  . So much effort for so little...frustrating, any ideas

I had my breakthrough when placing all mdls next to each other and not tweaking them. When everything showed up like it shpuld I began to tweak them. If that's OK place them at the same position. ;)

Tried that Thorsten, didn't do any tweaking just used the native MDL's, all three appeared in the scenery side by side :D

Went back in, tweaked MDL, renamed and recompiled XML to create new BGL and tried again...just one appeared, changed the wind velocity up and down and was still left with the Medium... no change at all, this is doing my head in :banghead: :banghead:

Again: Did you tweak the objects for the wind direction? You can't do that together with another tweak I think. (Well, why not? :o)

No didn't tweak for wind direction just velocity..mind you what is odd is if you use CAT, the variable is 0C72h, when I use MDL Tweaker it is 0C72 could it be anything to do with that

Ahaaaaaa!!!! It works, however I didn't realise that it didn't work dynamically and you have to keep closing and opening FS9 to see the changes, now how the heck do you get it to change direction....

You have two possibilities:

1. Create 2 objects (medium and strong winds) for each direction, I'd suggest to divide the 360 into 6 parts, so you'll have 19 objects. :D :D

2. Like Arno suggested: use cat and the possibility to include several different animations for different wind velocities. Then tweak this mdl with the wind direction. I'm not sure, if this works correct with mdlmaker.

At the moment I have 3 objects Low(which jiggles about a bit)Medium (stronger jiggling) and High (well you can guess, not so much jiggling but swaying :) ), let me get this right

Low

Rotate a few degrees in Gmax and save as Low_R30(for example, export and tweak MDL

Medium

Same concept, rotate object by 60 degree chunks and naming accordingly Medium_R30, Medium_R60 etc export and tweak

Same again with High

Am I getting this right  I only end up with 14 objects.

I used obhect library and object placer to put all together, presumably that will work, I don't really undersdtand what Arno's method is

If you have an animated windsock, it might help to combine the animations for different headings using CAT. Then you only end up with a few MDL files for the different wind speeds in the end. You can tweak these with MDL Tweaker.

I still haven't had the time to test my idea to get everything back in one MDL file.

Hi Arno, hmmm still not getting this :( The way I understand it I have to save and export 6 Versions of the Medium Windsock from Gmax, each with a different name to create the various rotations (that is another problem, how do you get Gmax to rotate an object, I do 60 deg chunks but it goes back to the start after 120  ). I therefore end up with 6 MDL files, albeit not tweaked at all.

I am confused as to how CAt fits into he equation, how or what would you use it for (Wind variation, presumable min/max would be 0-60/61-120,12-180 and so on)

I can see what the concept is (I think) at the moment I only have the 3 MDL's (Low/Medium/High) saved as a Library object(these are the tweaked MDL's). I then created just one BGL file, however they do not rotate. What you are saying if my understanding is correct is I could still end up with just the 3, except they would each contain the Wind rotation variations...I think I just confused myself now  :D

Help

Hi,

Yes, you should be able to combine the models for different wind headings with CAT. Just use the secondary animation option to select between the different animations based on the variable of the wind heading.

You would have to do this process for all wind speeds. So in the end you get 3 MDL files for different wind speeds. These can then be tweaked with MDL Tweaker to let only show one at the same time.

If you windsock is animated, this is the only way to get it rotating to the wind. As the rotate to wind tweak does NOT work on animated parts. The only other option would be to make a seperate MDL file for each condition, but then you would end up placing loads of windsocks :D.

Hi Arno,

Think I must done something wrong here. I have 18  MDL files (6 for each wind strength). I used CAT as follows (this could be where I have gone wrong)

Nothing entered in the first 2 screens , went straight to secondary animation, created 6, selected the .asm files for each and put in the various directions, i.e 0 - 60,61 - 120 121 -180 etc. Did this for each wind strength and ended up with one MDL in each strength category, as we expected 3 in total.

Then using MDL tweaker I selected each MDL in turn and tweaked, agian no errors reported.

Finally created an xml library for these 3 MDL's and created one BGL for the lot, not an error reported anywhere, problem is the windsock stays completely still now, whichever strength and whichever direction

Any ideas :D

Hi,

All that sounds correct, so it seems you are getting there :).

Two things come to my mind that seem to go wrong:

  1. I think the range of the wind direction is not 0-359, but 0-32767.
  2. You always need to place at least two windsocks (on different locations both active on the screen) for the wind direction and speed conditions to work fine. You can for example hide the dummy ones in buildings if your airport only requires one.

Now I am confused, where does 32767 come into it  do I just divide that by 6 to get the individual settings?

Also, my windsock is for a small Airfield, nowhere to hid another and when you say 2 more, which 2? I have a choice of 18  Gmax Windsocks

This is hard work for something so small :D

That's right. I think you'd better use 65535 as max. Afaik this is the maximum value for the wind direction.

You just need one more object that is tweaked by wind direction. Maybe you want to place signs at the tower showing the active runway or something like that. [edit: sorry, that won't work!]

If you don't have another object, just rotate an invisible (neg z-value) simple object. That will do it. ;)

It sure is, but t pays off. :D ;)

ooookaaay....so rather than do my rotation 0-60 61-210 etc...I do 0 - 10923,10924-21845,21846 - 32768 and so on till I get to 65535

With regard to the rotating object, can I simply use a post by the side of the windsock pole..presumably I can.

Sorry about this it is my age :D

By Jove I think I've cracked it   the only thing that may be something with FS9 anyway, it only changes strength and rotation upon a complete re-start of FS9, simply ending the flight and changing doesn't do it. Unless there is something else I have missed.

Anyway thank you Thorsten and Arno, I'll release this ***!??// airfield eventually, heres a screen shot anyway
