• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

X-Plane to FSX?

Fellow Flight Sim users,

I downloaded a highly realistic scenery package for XP11 that I've been using for a couple days now. On a second computer, however, I have FSX installed, which doesn't have anything close to what I downloaded for XP11. With that being said, how could I install the files to work with FSX, and go in the locations they are in on XP11? The scenery includes highly detailed 3d models of buildings and landmarks in Downtown Milwaukee, WI. I like flying around there in FSX, and the generic buildings are pretty boring! I also checked with the developer of the scenery, but I wasn't sure if he was familiar with FSX. Any help you can provide is appreciated.
Regards,
Kevin Davis

Well, though I'm by know means an expert on XP, from my brief interaction with it it seems that the format of the scenery in XP is entirely different. So, for it to work with FSX, it would have to be reworked (downgraded, to some extent), and exported withy the FSX SDK's tools to make it compatible with FSX. I don't think this work is trivial and would require some learning, not to mention the source files. Again though, I'm by no means an expert, but that's my best guess :)

Ben is correct in that the two are not interchangeable. I've been doing scenery for FSX/P3D for years and had to relearn scenery design concepts for my move to XP. The naming conventions are different for one. . .scenery objects in FSX are "bgl" files while in X-Plane they are "obj" files so those would have to be converted. The texture files, while "dds" format in X-Plane are not exactly the same as "dds" files in FSX so those would also have to go through some kind of conversion to be usable.

Probably not what you were hoping for but the reality is that it's better to search out a true FSX equivalent scenery if possible because you might spend a lot of time trying to get everything converted and then not be happy with what you end up with.

It's funny that even complex sceneries as FlyTampas ie Copenhagen and Dubai can be converted to Xp with good results, but not the other way around.
It's not legal to share those sceneries,(and I don't have any of them), but I have seen them work in XP11.

You should be able to convert the buildings with MCX from X-Plane to FS formats. 3D objects and placement information is relatively easy. Converting complete airports is harder...

Hi Arno:

My initial attempt to use the January 26, 2019 development version of MCX to convert a X-Plane *.OBJ to a MDL was successful for the geometry, but MCX' remapping the X-Plane "*.DDS" format 1-piece texture sheet / atlas on the MDL was not successful.

When you get an opportunity, could you please take a look at the 3D model cited in this thread:

Note that the original 3D model apparently used to make the X-Plane scenery is a actually 3D Warehouse Sketchup model:

Thanks for your ongoing efforts with making MCX fully capable of converting X-Plane 3D models into other formats. :)

Hi,

In the texture options you need to set the "Flip DDS" option to true, X-Plane uses a different convention for the origin of the texture, therefore the mapping is flipped.

Thanks for clarifying that additional requirement to re-map *.DDS files onto MDLs derived from X-Plane *.OBJ files, Arno ! :)

I'll try that conversion again sometime soon. :coffee:

Hi Arno,

I am trying to import an X Plane terminal building to MCX for conversion. The model is imported OK but I get the errors:-

14:22 ObjectRenderer Warning Failed to load texture: texturelfot.png
14:22 ObjectRenderer Warning Failed to load texture: texturelfotlit.png

I have flipped the DDS option to TRUE but still no luck.

Cheers for any help you may be able to give.

Hi,

That warning means MCX can't find those two png textures. Are those textures with your model?
