• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Has anyone started to consider reusing/making models, textures and code cross platform compatible? I cant be the only one thinking there is synergies to be realized here with XP11 slowly taking off....

First though; is there anyone even here from the XP world?

Its doubtfull that any X-Plane people are here.

I tried starting a bridge to get 'us' into exporting planes into XP format. The valley was huge, unfortunately. One issue was animations. Seems to be quite difficult. Another 'was' amount of textures. In Flight Simulator, we use huge amounts of textures, while in XP, there were restrictions. I do not know if that still exists, if the limitations have been lowered.

Another thing is that there needs to be a way to export from 3DS Max, various versions of Max, to XP format.

So those things need to be met.

I believe XP has exporters for Blender, which is nice. Many people are now building planes in Blender for FS. So exporting to XP format should be easy enough. Then animating the parts in the XP animation 'program' and then setting up the airfile data.

Oh.... You also have to build a true wind-tunnel model if I remember correctly. Your wings have to be proper spec airfoils. XP is a real-time aerodynamics engine, designed for testing airplane designs in real world aerodynamics, so that has to be met. I think I heard that they get around this by making a 'hidden' aerodynamics model that uses the air system, but you still need the hidden 'created' model for proper aerodynamics to work properly. In FS, we fill out the data for the wings and things and the computer/sim engine takes it from there. In XP, it must have a 3D design to fly through the sim 'air'.

It would be nice if it were easier to make things for XP.

I tried hanging out in the XP rooms back when XP10 was about to come out. If they found out you were from FS land, you were hit with the cold treatment and insults. I dont know what its like now. Hopefully a bit more friendly now.

^^^ This!

The unfriendly and arrogant attitudes I encountered totally turned me off on XP any version as well.

Being a scenery developer, i think converting my work wouldnt be too hard! After all they Are just 3d models and textures..

Bill: Are they still not offering a way to get Max models into xplane??

Still wondering why FSX is treated as inferior when it's one of the two flight sim out there to feature a well working ATC and AI traffic system. The other is - funnily enough - Falcon BMS.

Hey Finn,

I have no idea. Its been years...

Laminar should really make an SDK and export tools like LM then, to make It easier for us to add models to their sim!

I really wish they would offer some official export tools for Max, or Blender at least. If the ESP-based scripts can be re-coded in Python to export from Blender, couldn't Laminar theoretically do this in the reverse order with either XPlane2Blender or their AC3D tools? (Besides the fact that XP2B was developed by the 3rd party community of course.) I've hardly seen ANY third party modelers using AC3D for their XP projects...so I wonder why they still only *officially* offer this route. The UI is just...strange...

And yeah, I've encountered those "edgy" X-Plane users in the forums on a few occasions. I think they just like making FS users feel inferior because we're what they perceive as mainstream, or "normies". A similar type of thing happens among a small part of the Linux crowd (usually the less savvy kids who try to impress their friends.)

Overall though, I'm increasingly enjoying X-Plane the more I use it, when I can find the time of course. It's got great potential but only a select few have really tapped into it. I'm sure that with more community involvement it could be a solid platform for developers.

You 'can' put some of the keyboard commands to be the same as FS. The only difference is, they do not have a multi-view mode key like we have, which is S key. (Goes from panel to outside to view point, etc). Also, they do not have a zoom-out in the VC like we have. Theirs is a goofy 'your face is in the gauges' appearance which you can get somewhat back from the gauges through a trick, I forget how that was done.

Same with Apple and Windows people. sigh....

Carenado have really done wonders. Their work is now all over XP. Must be nice.
