• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

ADE vs ModelConverterX Ground Polys

I have been using the Ground Polygon Wizard included with ModelConverterX. Does the ADE Ground Poly Editor offer any additional features?

Mike, they are entirely different tools.

As I understand it, the MCX Ground Poly Wizard converts standard polys that you have previously created (with Gmax or whatever and positioned with a great deal of trial and error) into FS8-style ground polys and carves them up in 100m. "chunks, for FSX. Without intending to minimize it, in a sense MCX is a substitute for FS8 MakeMDL.

ADE-GP allow you to create FS8-style ground polys (lines and polys) directly on the ADE drawing surface. If necessary, the ADE-GP compiler performs the same 100m "chunking" operation. ADE-GP come with a comprehensive user manual detailing all its features.

Don, thanks for the information.

You are right, orientation of the ground poly with ModelConverterX is a bit of a PITA. Does the ADE v1.55 available at the Airport Design Editor site include ADE-GP? My development computer is not on the internet so I can't do any auto updates from ADE.

GP Polys requires ADE 1.60 which is in beta. Also it does require an internet connection to get the updates. At the moment we are not delivering manual updates - sorry..............

Jon, can I get away with a dummy FSX folder (with appropriate FSX/SDK registry entries) on my internet computer and update from there?

If so does ADE use registry entries I would have to make on my development computer if I copied the ADE folders and files from the internet computer.

I am using Windows XP Professional.

I think the only way would be to install ADE on your internet computer and not worry about FS etc on it. Then you could copy files from that installation over to the one on your development machine. Generally the updates are only a few files and I guess I can tell you what they are...

Thanks, Jon. I will give that a try. I just thought that ADE might throw a hissy fit if it couldn't find the FSX or SDK folders and relevant registry entries when its installer was run on the internet computer.

Actually you are right but you can get over that by ensuring your global.ini file looks like this:

[TARGET]
Version=FSX
ShowAll=true

The last line stops ADE searching for versions on the computer

Installed ADE then searched my entire drive and was unable to locate a global.ini file.

You will need to create it with Notepad and put it in the main ADE folder.

global.ini goes in the main ADE application folder. It is usually created when you start ADE. However as George says if you do not get one then you need to create it with the lines given above and put it in the ADE main folder

Thanks, George and Jon. After the following warning dialogs:

ADE cannot find a valid path for FS.
Cannot find BglComp Folder.
Cannot find FS Folder.

I just dismiss them and the updating works fine. :)

OK - that is what I would expect. You are just trying to cheat ADE into getting the updates..

The only problem is that ADE seems to be multiplying like tribbles!

First I have v1.47.07 to load images that are sized to more than 10km or so per side in the display.
Second I have v1.55 for projects with smaller sized images.
Now I have v1.60 beta for projects with ground polys.

I just have remember which of my projects and images are in which versions folders. :o

Well there is really only one supported production version that is 1.55. 1.60 is still beta and will replace 1.55 when it becomes production. We may also do some more work on images for those who need big area images in 1,60 but at this time it is the same as 1.55
