• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

    Determining building heights

Hi, Has anyone used a digital camera to determine building heights ? It should be possible, by knowing focal length, sensor size and distance to the object to approximately work out the object's height. Just wondering whether anyone is using that method. Cheers, Siggy

    Microsoft buys Caligari (TrueSpace)

I am sorry if I posted this to the wrong spot, but I thought it's GMAX related. There were some news that Microsoft has bought Caligari who make a 3D modeling tool called "TrueSpace" (http://www.caligari.com/). While the talk is only about this being used for their Virtual Earth platform...

    FSX SDK Update SP1A

Hi, Just downloaded the SDK SP1A update from the FS insider web site. On the download page it says: It's unusual that this would not be an incremental update, but that we have to remove the current SDK (if updated) and re-install the one from the DVD. Am I understanding this correctly ...

    Display terrain elevation

Hi Arno & Dick, Thanks for your replies. Arno's solution I can use in conjunction with my scenery test MDL, just need to adjust 3 contact points it seems. Strangely, I thought the download is down, but I could just download Dick's tool. That works great too! The funny thing was when I was in...

[FSX] Blinking lights on towers etc. ?

Hi, Does anyone have an idea on how one would make blinking lights on top of towers etc. for FSX ? Does this require animation or effects ? If the latter, is there a stock one that I could use ? Cheers, Siggy

    Display terrain elevation

Hi, Is it possible to have the actual terrain elevation being displayed in FSX? The value shown when using ctrl-Z shows the altitude of the current aircraft's coordinate system's origin only. Cheers, Siggy

    Textured and untextured faces

Hi Arno, Jon, For the untextured parts did you leave the 'default' colour or did you apply an FSX material without a texture ? Perhaps that makes a difference ? Siggy

    GeoTIFF Mesh

It might be best if you opened a command window, then cd (change directory) to the directory that contains your source directory and then run resample directly on the command line and then check the (error) output. Alternatively, I would create a batch file and a shortcut as follows and then...

    Minimum DEM area

I had my terrain resolution set to 5m and that's why it looked that way. After reducing that to 2m and removing the house (that was there accidentally) it looked quite different at the top. [Can you remove the aircraft in top-down view? Sometimes it's disturbing]. Cheers, Siggy

Flag turning with the wind [FSX]

Hi José, I was thinking more about other objects to display rotated according to some other FS internal state variable like e.g. the wind turning a flag on a flag pole. Another example would be you want to render a telecommunications tower as a bitmap (when viewing from further away) and rotate...

    Minimum DEM area

Hi Guys, Thanks to all who replied. Your answers have encouraged me an I have gone through the pain (.inf file) and tried it myself (see screenshot). I used a 2x2 DEM file, i.e. 4 points of equal elevation, these famous 4.8m apart, and placed the entire thing at my FS-test area at N20 E0. Not...

    Boolean Problem

Hi José, The bridge has a number of similar elements. What I showed in the screenshot was only the middle part between the two arches. The top cross-braces (?) must fit between these arches (which are not round). I had a look at the bend modifier. It seems to give the same 'cutting angle' at...

Flag turning with the wind [FSX]

Hi Arno, Thanks for your answer! Looking at this example it is no wonder why sceneries almost never work properly in the next version. But, if we are lucky, perhaps a later SDK update may give us more control over objects, provided that the sim itself does not need an update for that too...

Flag turning with the wind [FSX]

Hi, I saw someone asking about the windsock and then started wondering whether it would be possible - with FSX SDK means only, not old BGL opcodes - to create a flag+pole where the flag turns with the wind ? Cheers, Siggy

    Boolean Problem

Hi José, That was a quick answer! Although I am not 100% sure I know what you meant or how to apply this here, you gave me an idea. I merged the stamp, made it an array so I can stamp all locations at once, then connected them all using the 'Connect' Compound Objects operator and then only...

    Boolean Problem

Hi, I'm trying to create some sort of lattice for a bridge. For this I created the basic shape of the bridge's arc and some sort of 'stamp' that I merge into the scene, move it to the right place and then apply the boolean (subract) operator to cut out the holes. As you can see in the...

    Minimum DEM area

Hi, A bridge that I made needs some small terrain adjustments on its ends. Is there a way (for FSX) that I can 'bend' the terrain in these two small areas at its ends only ? IOW, is there something like a minimum area of DEM data one has to supply to create a superset of DEM data for an area...

    FSX Materials at night

Hi José, Are you sure you mean that it is supposed to work for FSX ? For FS2004, it did work (as far as I remember) and you could also use a simple material in GMAX and make it semi-transparent (e.g. for glass). For FSX I had to use a bitmap with an alpha channel though. Cheers, Siggy

    GMAX black viewports

Hi Arno, Thanks. I'll stick to the OpenGL driver too then. Almost thought Windows XP was past its "best before date" again ;). Cheers, Siggy

    GMAX black viewports

Hi, Has anyone else had a problem with GMAX where it showed black viewports or had other redraw problems in viewports ? If yes, how can it be solved ? I was using the Direct3D driver until this started happening. Now I have switched to the OpenGL driver and things are back to normal. Would...
