• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Is it possible to launch two planes at the same time?

Well, you can set your departure times the same. But FS will decide which calls the tower first and thus departs first. Are you looking for something like a squadron takeoff? If so it would be better to ask over at the MAIW forums.

AI Flight Planner does not allow simultaneous takeoffs because the simulator does not support it. Closest you can come is two adjacent departure time slots. The image below shows the approximate delay, the first plane in the flight is zoomed close and the wingman plane's landing lights are visible in takeoff position.

The only way I know of to do squadron takeoffs is to create a separate airport for each AI aircraft (all converging on the same runway), assign one AI aircraft to each airport, and give them identical departure times. These are called "overlay airports" because they only have parking spots, apron routes, and a small runway. Only the original airport has all the visible objects. I'm sure the people over at MAIW have done this at some point.

Probably not quite what you are looking for, but there is (or used to be) a tool called FormationSetup which would allow you to set up a formation which would take off and fly together. You could then go and join it.

I like the cloned runway idea, it should dovetail invisibly onto any airport. There is the concern about uninvited AI hangar queens, though.

Thanks Tom, now that I know this is possible I will do this, but not right away. I have a few other things to finish first.

Dick, I used to use this program once, but it would be a possibility.
I will also look into this later.

Thank you both
Peter

The only problem with the multiple airport setup is that it takes a lot of trial and error to get both planes to arrive at the runway together by adjusting departure times, taxiway lengths, etc.

Correct me, Tom, if I'm wrong, I'll make a second airport (copy?) exactly the same, the same ICAO code but without buildings.
It makes me curious and seems like a big challenge.
But there is a lot of work to do.

No, it has to be a different ICAO code. KLAX, KLA2, KLA3, etc. Be sure it's a code not already used in FS. The overlay airports should have no visible taxiways, aprons, or anything else but the runway, and it can be tiny if you like (I assume). Again, I'm sure MAIW will have more info, I've never done it. I do use the technique for helicopters, but they don't use the same runway.

Thanks Tom,
this is already a big step forward with your info
I will now inform on the MAIW Forum.
Don't expect a solution right away, as I said I have other things to do first, but when I have the solution I'll be sure to post it here, Promise.
thanks

I just had contact with Steve (firebird) from MAIW, 2 planes at the same time is almost impossible.
The little that is possible comes with a lot of problems and extra work and many complications.
As I go over your findings and Steve's, I'd better stop with this idea.
Nevertheless, I would like to thank you for the effort you have made.
