• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX 3D Models / Objects Request

I'd like to apologize in advance if this post is incorrectly placed. After browsing through fsdeveloper for 2 days I could not find a thread that was for requests of obj /mdl files.
I am not skilled at modeling 3D objects. I tried my hand at sketchup to do this, and was completely lost.

I am updating a familiar airfield KPLU Pierce County -Thun Field (formerly 1S0) in the Puget Sound / Pacific Northwest region of Washington state. I have it almost complete, except for 2 buildings that I cannot locate even a similarity too on any sim site's file library.

They are: Clover Park Technical College's Flight School - which sits at the end of RWY35 - hence the red & white checkered paint job.

The other is Spencer Aircraft's major airframe repair hangar. Located at KPLU next to the FBO.

I am not looking for something for free. I know that time and skill has value.
If there are any 3D modelers here on fsdeveloper.com that are available and willing to create these 2 objects for me, so I may complete this updated airport, I'd greatly appreciate it and I am will to compensate you for your time and skill.

This is STRICTLY for MY own personal use, this is not approved for redistribution.
This is for FSX boxed version with Acceleration and the acceleration's SDK installed. Object placement / Airport design handled by ADE

Also, if there is someone that can explain to me how to add text & images to the ground (i.e. Taxiway / Runway), I'd appreciate that as well. There is the words "PIERCE CO." (short for County), that is painted on the center point of the main taxiway. At the far south end of the taxiway, nearest to RWY35, there is a compass image painted on the added apron.

These are all viewable via Google Earth, just search KPLU and select Pierce County Thun Field in the list.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You

For the writing on the tarmac. If you are using ADE for the airport itself, you can either create multiple ground polygons (one for each letter) from the stock lettering textures, or you can create your own custom texture, add it using the GP Texture Editor, and then place it on the ground.

Thanks Tom,

I'll give that a go, sounds simple enough. BTW, I love the work you all are doing over at CalClassic Propliners. I have several of your aircraft installed. Keep 'em coming! :)

I can help you with the building modelling

Hello Tankerguy72,

I am greatly appreciative for any assistance you can give. First off, if there is any information you need, just holler. Secondly, I want you to know that I am highly interested in learning to do the many things that all you folks can do in the Scenery design, as well as Aircraft design area of FSX, but I am seriously struggling at some of the most simplest of things. Like creating a 3D model of the 2 buildings mentioned. Hell, I can't even manage to match-up a damn taxiway of 10m to a tapered apron that goes from 20m to 60m without it looking all catty-wompus and screw-balled. But 1 thing I am not, is lazy or a quitter. So if I can learn anything at all; toward being self-reliable and maybe learning enough to someday help another by paying it forward, then I am very grateful to every "teacher" and helping hand that can guide me there.

And as I said in my OP, I am not looking for a hand-out, I am willing to reimburse for a persons time and skill. Just let me know what I can and or need to do on my end to assist.

Thanks again Tank! :D

Sincerely grateful,
~WEB~

Wow!! those are amazing... ummm, what can I say... Let me know what you think is fair for them and if possibly I'd really like to TRY to grasp the concept of how to do what you managed to do in an hour. If you used Trimble Sketchup, then that's WAY more impressive than the garbage I managed to scratchup in 2 days worth of headaches and anguish. Probably because I'm very impatient with myself when it comes to self-teaching. I have always been a step by step tutorial learner. But anyways, you've totally impressed the hell out of me, Tank!

Let me know when you are done with and ready to release the objects / model files to me.. I did say I'll reimburse anyone willing to take the time and use their skill / talent to help me out, I stand by my word. Let me know what's fair and I'm happy to pay for them.

As for the ability to use the objects in a publicly released collection, whether it be freeware or payware; I would declare you to be the author of both 3D objects with rights to the red & white checkered building as it is, in it's generic form, for public release in any collection you see fit.. As for the Spencer Aircraft airframe & avionics repair hangar, if you would like to have the legal right to release the 3D object into public use (freeware or payware), I would be happy to go (in person, if need be) and get signed written permission from the owner of the company to use his logo and/ or it's likeness and any verbiage thereof, minus the trademarking of his company name "Spencer Aircraft". That way if you do ever decide that you'd like to have the right of public release, it's all legal for you to do so, at that time. So again, let me know.

As the saying goes.... Sir, you have left me gobsmacked. Tank, I am Sincerely appreciative for your help. I cannot wait to finish this updated airfield. I could not have asked for a better outcome.

Honestly, I think that fsdeveloper.com should have, if there isn't one already, that I've over-looked; a Modelers 3D object / Scenery Design request thread and marketplace. So that the talented people, such as yourself and MANY others with your talents, can offer custom objects / scenery for FEE or FREE, as determined by the author; to the less talented / knowledgeable folks like myself.

Thank you again Tank!

Sincerely grateful,
~WEB~

You dont owe me anything for these. I have learned so much from this community id like to give a little back.

Ill finish up the objects by tomorrow and send them over.

As far as building them I use 3ds max. start with simple box shape. I open up Google Earth. Find the building in question and use the measure tool in GE to get the dimensions of the building. If you notice on GE on the bottom is shows the elevation where ever you drag the mouse. So ill start by dragging the mouse near the building and get the ground elevation, then drag it on top of the building and get the new elevation. Subtract the two and you have the height of the building. Youll have two measurements if the building has a pitched roof. Add the measurements to your box in your modelling program and thats your start. Then you can start plugging in details or such.

Hope that helps a bit. Do what you wish with the objects theyre yours once you get them ;)

Happy modelling

This helps tremendously, Tank.

I have yet to dip my toes into 3DS Max, but with what information you have given me to start out with, is FAR better than the blindfold I have been wearing. My dumb self would have never thought about measuring the elevation during the drawing of the object. I would have just measured the meters of the object to get the overall rectangle of it, as close as I could and then fought like mad to figure out the pitch of the roof. This is nothing like the Home & Landscaping CAD program I have used back in my construction days. That was more point, click, adjust dimensions. Kinda WYSIWYG, if you know what I mean. Anyways, I am indebted to you, so if ever there is anything I can help you with, just say the word.

Thanks a million Tank! You rock!

Hey Tank,

Just was wondering if you were still at it? I hope this message reaches you and finds you in good health and spirits. Totally understand if you had to bail on this for things that might have come up IRL. I took a gander at 3DS... To afford the licensing for that program, I'd have to be doing this as a profession / commercially. I think I'll try my hand at Blender.

Hope all is well
Sincerely,
~WEB~
