• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

ADE BGL-file size

Hello!

I have not used ADE myself yet, but a German-speaking member of our forum posted the following question:

I use the “Megaairport Frankfurt X” from Aerosoft (FSX with Acc.). All works fine, framerates are ok.

Now I have a new PC with Quad Core CPU. Therefore I added additional ground vehicles and used “Vehicle-Phat" for proper runway allocation. All that works fine.

The original BGL-file from Aerosoft is 92 KB. For the above mentioned alterations I have used ADE. I imported the Aerosoft BGL, added my additions and compiled it again under the same name.
But this new BGL-file is only 78 KB.
This I do not understand.
Is it possible that ADE does not import everything what is contained in the original BGL-file?
Or is there another reason?

Your opinions are appreciated.

sincerely

Helli

For FSX there are 3 different airport enhancement Utilities available, several converters and airports that are done by hand.

No bgl is going to be the same size. Each different Utility that designs airports uses different techniques and can add XML code to accomplish one thing that another Utility may not add or do it a different way.

With third party BGL files it is always possible there there is something in there that is not going to be passed through since we do not know what was used to create the original. As Jim says some tools can add information into the BGL and others strip it out. If you were to load an ADE generated BGL file into AFX it will strip out all the scenery features since it cannot handle them.

In this case if there is approach code in the third party BGL file and the user has chosen not to pass it through then the new BGL will be smaller for that reason also. The most important things is that users do not use the new BGL file as a replacement for the third party one but place it higher in the priority order so that it is loaded by FSX after the third party one. In that case features such as approaches should be preserved

Hello Jim, hello Jon.

Many thanks for your explanations.
I passed them on to my collegue and he told me, that this convinced him to carry on with his designs.

I am glad that I can help via the language boundaries.

Post Scriptum
Jon, only after re-reading your answer I realized, how important your last statement is (the one about activating both BGLs)
Maybe it is only due to the fact, that I basically adapt other peoples szenery-BGLs, that I fell not yet into this trap.
I think I shall pass this message on in other relevant discussions.
Thank you for it!!
