• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

ADE Ground Polygone Problem ? or not ?

Hi Jon,
i have make with FSX KML the ground for 7 islands.
This files have diffrent groundlevels, also at the Airportground.

When i have made the Airport for any Island, then gives it a mistake with the ground levels between FSX KML BGL Files and Stock Ground-Polygnes (Airport) from ADE, at the new Airport.
Example:
The altitude at KML Files for the Ground at Airport is (new) 2m. and other levels.
The Stock Altitude from this airport is 0,91m.
The ADE set not the Stock Ground Polygones from the Airport, at the new Ground KML Polygone Ground files automaticly.
All the Apron Polygones from ADE is at level 0,91m and not at new level 2m, and the Aircraft sink it in, at the ground.

The Apron Polygones let me see when i go to higher altitude with Aircraft. At Ground....no Apron.

I have also rebuilt the Database, but after this, the same effect.
I have set the new ADE Airport Altitude to the 2m and then it shows right.
But.... at this moment i dont see any chance to make a Airport with diffrent Altitude for the runway and other polygones.
We have a Airport at Germany "Meinerzhagen" it has a runway he goes from level 5m to 8m up the runway line.

Is this right, or is there a chance to make a runway with diffrent altitude ?

Regards ULI

In the Tools menu of ADE there is a Change Airport Altitude. Place the new airport altitude into the box and select change.

No utility including ADE controls the altitude of a airport or the ground around the runways. FSX ALWAYS uses the altitude in the root APXnnnn.bgl regardless of what you place into the ADE property window.

When you select Change the Airport Altitude ADE makes a pre-load airport header and places it into your FSX\Scenery\World\scenery folder. Now FSX will honor the new airport altitude.

Once you make the Change Airport Altitude with ADE now change all your runways, Localizers, Start Locations, etc. to the same altitude.

There is some weirdness with ADE 1.4 compared to 1.37 regarding polygons no matter what I try! At three airports now, I have taxiway polygons disappearing into the ground. It has never happened before.

At ENZV I set the flatten to the same (rounded of decimal value) as the airport. It did not help. The remedy was to delete the taxtiway and draw it once more. This has happened with two other airports.

Now I am working on a new airport, and one of the taxiways is hidden. But I can see the taxtiway edge lines. The default MS flatten is 822.045 meters. But in ADE I can only set 822.04 or 822.05 for the airport altitude. I did set 822.045, but next time checking it was rounded of to 822.05. Even if I think this is not the reason for disappearing taxiways, I would like to be able to set the exact same value as for the flatten polygon, with three decimals after the comma for the airport.

The altitude stuff is not going to help in this case anyway...the taxiway will not show up before I re-draw it.

PS: Just did that again: Did not touch the altitudes. I re-drew the taxiway, and now it is there, visible in FSX.

ADE only uses .x or .xx decimals in some settings. Jon can expand this in the future release like he did for runway and start location headings (6 place decimals)

ADE is using two decimal places for altitude in meters - this represents an altitude discrimination of 1cm or 10mm. I am pretty sure that is not enough to cause problems with flattens and runways etc - setting it 1cm below the airport altitude should not have any visible effect - but then I could be wrong. Giving another decimal place discriminates to 1mm and while that exists for some objects I always thought it overkill ;)

You can also change the altitude of the stock airport if you need to. That also is to the nearest cm

Thanks for the input, guys!

I have seen small differences before, and as you state, they have not made any trouble for me so far. But as mentioned, even if I don not do anything to altitudes and use the default flatten height for most of my 16 airports, the invisible poly problem still exists. Now and then.

There is also another thing: Where a taxiway enters the runway, I often loose the poly colour. But the edge line is there! Had to draw a separate curved poly to remedy this on several airports. Check the pic.

FSX has to do the same thing based on what texture the runway is vs the taxiway texture. The line draw to the runway node can also cause this problem which is not related to the flatten.

The fillet problem has been around since the early days of FS9 and AFCAD 2.21

Thx for clearing that up Jim.

I suspected bugs in FSX. I can live with the other problem regarding taxiways becoming invisible now and then - just have to use a redraw.

Btw: I often use different materials for runways, taxiways and aprons. Mostly Asphalt, Concrete, Oil Treated (for threshold extensions) and Bitumenous.

I have modified the Asphalt and Concrete textures. I think they were way too light and looked like desert runways. I reduced red a little, and made them darker. I hope this do not (should not!) affect the situation I have gotten into.

If you use Bitumenous as the runway texture for example and then use asphalt for the taxiways you have to make all the fillets with aprons. Bitumenous and asphalt don't mix and yet many airport runways are designed with that combination. It appears that concrete and asphalt are the only two that will mix and fillets are drawn by default.
