• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Animating Doors in Gmax

I guess my question is, how would I go about starting this task? I see all the animation tools at the bottom, such as Time Tag, etc....I want nice smooth motion, but don't want it so fast that it looks fake too.

I Know my compiler is giving me warnings and what needs to be fixed, so it will be no problem to get it to be able to do so when I compile again. (at least I got that portion going)

So, on the original question, what can be done about the doors? I got them all modeled properly using the Polygon method, and worked out great....(will post renders later tonight....:))

1. FSX: Assign the door an animation tag in the Animation Manager FS9: Give the door a name like door_passenger
2. Move the pivot point of the door to the hinge point. (Hierarchy Tab (tree diagram icon), Affect Pivot Only, Center to Object button, move pivot to hinge point, click Affect Pivot Only again)
3. Check that the Keyframe slider is at 0 (full left, along the bottom of the window).
4. Set a keyframe at keyframe 0 (door closed). (In the Motion tab (moving tire icon) click the Rotation button to set the keyframe.)
5. Move the Keyframe slider (along the bottom edge) from 0 to 100
6. Click the large Animate button at the lower right
7. Rotate the door to its open position
8. Click the Animate button again.
9. Slide the Keyframe button back to 0. Does it close properly?
10. If not, add intermediate keyframes:
a. Move Keyframe slider to 50
b. In the Motion tab (moving tire icon) click the Rotation button to set the keyframe.
10. Test again, etc.

Hope this helps,

Tom,

Thanks SOOO much for the step by step how to. That will TRULY help. Much appreciated. Will let you know how it works. Doing some more renderings of the gear door completed right now, but thanks again.

Adding this thread to a "My Favorites" so that it will be all set....:)

As I said, the good thing about networked Computers, is I can have this one up with my second monitor, and follow step-by-step....:)

If the door opens/closes too fast, adjust the <Lag> value for door0 in your modeldef.xml file.

FSDS Animation
1.FSX Call the door "door0" if it is the first door in the door sequence. Call later doors door1 etc. Move its pivot point to the hinge line (shift move) if you have not done this already.
2 Copy/Paste. Delete points on new part Door0.1 except on hinge line, call this Door0PARENT. Means it can not be seen, but has the same position and orientation as the door.
3 Select door0, make its part parent, Door0PARENT.
4 Select Animation mode and frame 0
5 "Set Key Frame".
6 Advance to frame 50 (press N until at 50)
7 Press F2, Rotate appropriate axis through appropriate degrees for half open door, makes sure door rotates the way you want it to rotate to full open.
8 "Set key Frame"
9 Advance to frame 100 (press N until at 100)
7 Press F2, Rotate appropriate axis through appropriate degrees for full open.
8 "Set key Frame"
9 Deselect Animation mode, press F2, make sure door has zero rotations when not animated so in FS the animation starts from the closed position. Save.
10 File, Create FS object, Scenery Aircraft or Rotorcraft. Have a beer, yawn, job done!
