• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Another FRUSTRATING problem!

An Alternative Way?

OK rar is not an acceptable extension - you need to zip them into a file with a .zip extension A list of acceptable extensions is shown above the Attachment dialog:

Neither KML nor RAR are listed

Then, it looks like I cannot upload them.
Matthres, could I just post the content (texts) of the files?

Is SBuilder part of FSX SDK or a different program? If so, where to get it (a link)?

dito

No it is not part of the SDK. There are two versions, one for FS9 (Version 2.06) and another for FSX (SbuilderX). In both cases visit www.ptsim.com and go to the forum. For tutorials on using the program you can visit my site or go to www.fs-freeflow.com where Scott and the guys use it for Freeflow scenery. Please note that for FSX the program is still in development. Luis Sa (the developer) does visit here and can also be contacted at the site above

Can you not create a zip file? That is the most common form of compressed archive

How about now? I got it PRAISE GOD!!!

Also, Im not sure if you know but you can have multiple polygons/polylines and "folders" in a single .KML file.

In Google Earth you can create folders, and use these to organize your project in a logical way.

For example you could do this:-

* Create a folder in Google Earth called "Chicago"
* Create a subfolder called "Freeways"
* Create another subfolder called "Lakeshore Drive"
* Trace your freeways and put them into the Lakeshore Drive subfolder
* Then save the "Chicago" folder as Chicago.KML.

eg

Code:
Chicago
  Freeways
    Lakeshore drive
       Freeway Part 1
       Freeway Part 2

When you open Chicago.KML in FSX KML you will then see all your folders and polylines/polygons etc.

Ok... I tested it and FSX KML doesn't like the extra "." in the filename.

Can you rename your file "Lakeshore Dr_3.kml" instead of "Lakeshore Dr.3.kml"

Should work fine then.

Hi Matthews,

I just did change the name to <name>Lakeshore Dr_4.kml</name> and got the very same error message. I believe 1.06 will do better!

That's interesting and thank you for the input!!!

Hi, Bene

You can download from the link:

http://www.ptsim.com/sbuilder/setup.msi

Please, read everything carefully to get things working.

Regards,

José

Hi Jon and José,

Thank you for the links! I will explore them and learn from whatever comes to accomplish my envisioned projects (By the way, the images in the SBuilder tutorial are for some reason NOT displayed. Thus I can't follow the line of thought they are trying to make at a given point. The image the refer to as examples are NOT shown.

Jon,

Some of those Florida sceneries on your website and truly stunning!

Did you rename the file or just change the <name> tag inside the file?

I meant for you to try renaming the file, ie in Windows Explorer highlight the file, press F2 and rename the file to "Lakeshore Dr_4.kml"

Now I did both and it WORKED!!!

But after starting FSX to see the results I concluded that Mace's and Matthews' inputs that follow are the way to go:

GoogleEarth is typically very accurate. But the data Microsoft used for Lakeshore Drive might be off. What that means for you, is it gives you two options:

1) add your FreewayTraffic line to Microsoft's existing Lakeshore Drive..., or
2) remove Microsoft's Lakeshore Drive (Exclude_Roads_2_Lane,...etc.) and re-make Lakeshore Drive using GoogleEarth data, then add your traffic on top of YOUR more accurate road

Yes exactly... I would be doing option 2... Exclude the existing road, retrace Lakeshore drive from Google Earth, mark it as a road, copy it and mark the copy as freeway. Then you have very accurate road and freeway.

Also... redo the shoreline too!

Rather than trying to "patch" the inaccurate default data, just redo it using GE and FSX_KML... you will end up with a very accurate Chicago, shorelines, rivers, islands, roads, freeways, land class polys etc etc

SBuilder Tutorial

Which Tutorial are you referring to?

It starts out with this message:

"Terrain Design for Flight Simulator X
April 2007

Flight Simulator X introduces new methods for creating terrain scenery elements. This document presents the basic concepts and illustrates the use of SBuilder (Scenery Builder) for FS X by Luis de Sá for making new terrain.

While the sections dealing with concepts contain much valuable information, the use of SBuilder does not necessarily require knowing all this. So, inexperienced, and even experienced, designers who wish to skip these sections can go directly to the tutorial on SBuilder and refer to them later as needed. "

I downloaded it with on the same site as the SBuilder setup, manifold toolbar, and another pack.

This is the tutorial by Luis Feliz-Terado

It works fine here. It is a html based tutorial with the images in a sub folder.

Put the files in the right folders

Here, too.

When unzziping the file you downloaded, let unzip tool take care of the folders structure.
