• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Another Texture Problem

Hi All

Ok Im working in FSDS3 and I found a texture I wanted to use (one from one of the ez-scenery files) . Its a brick building , however I took the windows out and moved around some parts of the brick to cover them up . All seemed to work well shows up in FSDS but FS wont load them. Any suggestions or helpfull hints ? Also they are 32bit as I recall but I even tried to change them to 8bit and so on and nothing.

Mike

Hi, what graphics program are you using to change the textures? I use DXTBmp and it always serves me well. Are you saving as MDL and then putting it through EZ-Scenery? I am no expert as I am still learning to use FSDSv3 but perhaps I can help? Send me the texture if you like.

Hey

I use PSP and DXT as well Im sure Im doing something wrong here not sure what.

Thanks
Mike

BTW it is a texture from another EZ Library and have no intentions of uploading so no one get mad.

Hi, I did a little practice this morning. I worked on a pic and saved in 2 formats. 1st was DXT1(No Alpha) - this didn't show in FS but it did in FSDS - I ended up with a grey rectangle! I also saved in extended 24 bit bmp and this worked in both. Now why the DTX1 didn't show foxes me as I use it all the time. Anyway I like your bricks :) - you use the same prgrams as I do!

Panic - I think I got it wrong! I did it again and this time the 24bit bmp didn't work but the DXT1 and DXT1(No Alpha) did. Anyway I am attaching all 3 for you to see.

In FS it is best to use the DXT format with mipmaps for your textures. 24 bit texture are not supported in FS. However a lot of design programs can not show DXT textures directly, so in that case you would have to use a different format in the design program.

As DXT textures have a compression that is not a bad idea, as you probably want to keep an origional uncompressed version of your texture somewhere. You can use that one in the design tool as well then.

I usually use ImageTool to make my DXT textures, but DXTBMP should also do the job.

Thanks a bunch guys. I will ck it out as soon as I get home tonight (at work now ). I really appreciate all the help. Gotta love this place !

Hey

I got home and tried all 3 of the ones zipped up and still with each one I got a greay box. Any ideas ? Im gonna work on it a little more tonight and see what happens..

Well it's got me beat! I've been at it all morning - the only thing I get is a grey square with 1 side ONLY showing the texture! I did another trial and used EOD and FSSC - brilliant - works like a charm! I then used different textures on all the sides except the face, which remained a DXT1 texture. It's OK but only one side is with your bricks!!!!! See the pic below - the small building is the EOD one.

Thanks a bunch ! I will try tonight and let you know either way....
I really appreciate you guys that step right in and help out when someone
needs help. I think that is what makes this site unique.

Also is there tutorial on texturing and using the DXT or image tool ?
Maybe one that goes step by step ? Believe it or not I used to paint A/c
(have many on avsim I did) and I knew those programs like the back of my hand. Of course after 3 brain surgeries Its hard sometimes to remember
yesterday. I have forgotten so much. Or maybe can some one post
a quick step by step . Im sure once I get into that part again most of the stuff will come back to me, its just getting started again.

Thanks Again
Mike

Hi Mike, please don't think I have it made! I tried various textures on the 'New Building' but met with failure every time! I tried to put a roof onto the building using a roof tiles textures that worked before with EOD but had the same results as we did before - one side is Ok but the others show only grey! It is exasperating. I do think though that it is a good idea to shut down the FSDS program every once in a while to clear the memory and start again. I have noticed that when I change the texture to something new it doesn't always show that I have changed the file by the save icon being lit up! I have a link for you to follow which might help - http://www.freeflightdesign.com/tutorials.html
Let me know if you have any luck - you can always send a PM if you don't want to post in the thread.

Hi
Thanks again ! I will check out the website provided and hope it will help me out. Again I really do appreciate all the help.

Hi Mike, I think it is a bug in FSDS. I have been trying all day to put a roof onto the buidling I had success with. Nothing worked. So I deleted the roof and copied and pasted the house and then changed the textures! To do the texture I used FS Repaint! I ruined a helicopter (only the damage bmp) just to use their tools - it worked. I tried all sorts of programs to arrange the texture but nothing worked except the original helicopter bmp (which is now my roof tiles). So I think that you must choose what you know to be a succesful FSDS model as a template - there is a template thingy in FSDS which I haven't tried yet. This worked for me. The result is in the pic below. Hope you understand what I am on about?

Hi Mike, as I said in my PM I think it is all about FSDS finding textures. I think the texture you want to use should also be placed in the FSDS Projects folder. I used VASS to try and arrange an object and it tells me it cannot find the file even though the default folder is marked for the FS9 texture folder. I had a go at making a large bricks texture and the result is attached. I used PSP to make it - but you will need to change it to bmp of course.

Hi guys...........

Same thing happens to me, I am sure it´s an FSDS bug...some textures work and some don´t...make sure you keep those that work in a "special" directory, like Warmingham says.;)

Warmingham, am still working on the towers!!!!

Hey

@ Warmingham, I sent you another pm today. Thanks !

Im gonna do a defrag on my puter and see if that helps. Maybe between running FS9, FSDS3, EZ-Scenery, Library maker (?) , moving files from here to there something got screwed up. I havent defragged in a couple of weeks
so it cant hurt.

Hey Solid, hows it going ? At least I know we arent alone in this problem.
Of course for me it all started with this one texture. Now I have seen a few others do the same thing that was working and I havent even touched.

mike

Hi Mike. Defragging never does any harm - it might even do some good - I am not an expert. Look - it is as I said. Steps to take.
1. Always start afresh with FSDS.
2. Push the texture through DXTBmp and save as DXT1-No Alpha.
3. Make sure that the texture is in the FSDS Projects folder as well.
4. Keep your fingers crossed- LOL
Honestly I try so many things that I do not know whether I am coming or going.
So even if the object doesn't come out OK first time (as happened to me this evening) - still go back to step 1 and try again.
There is supposed to be an upgrade for FSDSv3 to 3.5 - when they decide to release it, perhaps then some of the bugs will be taken out, and you and I and Mr Solid indeed will be happier!
