• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Apron Elevation Problem

Hello all,

I have been trying for several months to create Aiyura Airport, a field in the Papua New Guinea close to where I grew up. The runway is sloped which I have been able to replicate, however the apron does not match the field elevation and is sunk into the ground. I have put a flatten polygon around the area but to no effect. I have also tried raising the field elevation which also did not help. An easy solution would be to make the entire field flat but I would rather not do that. I have seen sloped runways done before so I should be able to replicate the situation. Any advice about this problem would be appreciated.

The files I have been using are included in this post if it helps. A word about the files: I separated the elements (runway, trees, apron) into different files in case that helped with the scenery (it did not).

The apron elevation is based on the airport elevation and just like runways, you can't slope the apron features unless you do a similar thing as your runway. To change your apron elevations as a whole, you'll need to create the new airport 's elevation in .xml -> .bgl and put it in a scenery/world location...to override the original airport elevation.

FS only works with flat airports. As stated above items like aprons, taxiways etc are going to be flat and at the airport reference altitude. ADE cannot create sloped airports.

Thanks for the quick response guys. Maybe I'm trying to beat a dead horse here, but I'm not looking to create sloped aprons, only sloped runways. What I've done is create a polygon in the shape of the runway which follows the contours of FSX scenery. Then I flattened a plateau at the appropriate height for the apron so that particular section of the airport is flat. My problem is that no matter what I do I can't raise the elevation of the apron to that of the airport. For example, my airport elevation is set at 5354ft and the apron doesn't go any higher than 5327ft.

I've attached a picture of the problem I've been encountering.

Did you modify the airport elevation to 5354 yourself or is that default?

If it isn't the default, there is the special step to override the default airport elevation.

As mentioned any change made to the airport reference altitude in the ADE properties will not be honored in the sim. This is because FS takes the first altitude that it reads - in this case the first is going to be that of the stock file and not your modified file.

You need a file that loads before the stock file. ADE can do this Tools > Change Airport Altitude. This will create a small file that will load first and also updates any airport objects to the new altitude.

Sloped runways

When runways are sloped in FSX I believe that it is typically a library object created in GMax with the attach tool used.
A tutorial for the basic theory is here at http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?title=Making_a_landable_platform_with_GMax
But doing this would open up a whole new can of worms that most people (including me) don't have the skill set to apply this method and make it work with the rest of the field.
