• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Attached effects not displaying...

I've created a taxiway edge lighting structure in sketchup, exported as collada, imported into MCX, converted textures, attached an effect (above the structure, so the model isn't blocking it) and exported as MDL.

Tried all different variables. No DAY=0;NIGHT=1 setting. Just DAY=0;NIGHT=1 setting. Duplicated with the DAWN=1;DUSK=1 setting, but I can't get the effect to display at all. The model loads up fine.

I used this method for FSX and it works perfectly. I have looked through this forum for some answers, and I cam across an exclusion issue, that sometimes exclusions zones will remove effects in FS9 and that the bgls that include exclusions should be alphabetically first. So I renamed my scenery library file containing the taxi edge model (with attached effect) to give it 'z_[filename].bgl' prefix, and also prefixed the placement bgl with 'z_' in order to make sure these are alphabetically AFTER the files including exclusions in an attempt to see if this was the issue. But it still does not work. I've run out of theories.

Any ideas? :(

Note that it may be that the placement BGL file name may also have to come alphabetically after any exclusion as well?

Hi Tom!

Thanks - I renamed both the library and the placement file to be alphabetically last, but alas, I still can't get it to display. :scratchch

Hi all - I think this may be something to do with FXEditor or MCX (or my settings in both)

I have both 'prefered sim' settings in both programs set to FS2004 and the relevant folders have been assigned. However, firstly when I go into FXEditor and click 'open' it takes me to my FSX folder... I manually go to the FS9 effects folder and open the relevant effect to edit

When I have attached this in MCX to the model and converted to MDL, I imported it to inspect (with show prticle effects on) and it is attempting to load the effect texture from my FSX effects folder......

So could this be the issue? If so, I just don't know how I can get it to load up from FS9 in the first place!

Okay so another update... I changed all my folder locations in FSEditor to my FS9 folder.. Edited the effect I wanted and saved again into my FS9 effects folder. Attached this to the model in MCX, but the effect texture is still loading from the FSX folder! :banghead:

EDIT: SO I've got the effect textures loading from FS9 when imported into MCX, so hopefully this means that everything is okay there. But it still won't display on the model.... Even outside of my work zone, at a default airport

To simplify things - I tried attaching a default fx and it still won't display attached to my mdl, even at default airports..

The only effects slider I can think of is the 'special effects' one in FS9 and it's all the way up. Still no luck

Come back to this issue. Started from stratch. But MCX is seeking to load the effect from my FSX folder even when I added an FS9 effect from my FS9 effects folder.... Any ideas?

What that screenshot shows is that MCX is loading the texture from FSX, not the effect. That is probably due to the order of the texture search paths shown in Options>Texture settings>TextureSearchPath.

The default set of paths lists FSX before FS9. I would assume that MCX goes down that list until it finds the texture it is looking for and it finds it in FSX before it looks in FS9.

You could try a couple things.

You might first try changing the order in the list.

If that doesn't work you could try removing the FSX path from the Texture settings. This could come back to bite you some time in the future if you neglect to add the path back in.

Or you could make a copy of the texture in FS9, rename the copy to a name not used in FSX, edit the effect .fx file to call the new texture name.

If you choose to distribute this work you could revert to the original file name to save having to include the texture.

Hope this helps.

cheers,
Lane

Hi Lane,

Thanks. I changed the ordering of the texture search path. The effect displays properly in MCX now, but alas I still can't get attached effects to display in FS9 :(
