• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Attaching effects to an animation.

Hey all,

I've been working on a animated train and I am trying to attach some light effects to it. I have tried to attach them with both AttachPts and using the cube method and both have the same results. The problem is that I only see the exhaust effect, no light effects. When I place the model with no animations, I see the light effects and the exhaust. I have linked all the effects to the train in Gmax, so the exhaust follows the train. I am wondering if it is my effect file, which is based off of fx_navwhi.fx or the way I link in Gmax. My hierarchy is like this:

train_car
-->attachpt_name

I'm wondering if the issue lies with the emitter lifetime, which is infinite for the exhaust, and only 0.50 for the lights. I'm using FSX, any help appreciated! :)

As I vaguely remember (FS2004), you can have animations or you can attach effects, but not both? Divide your objects to separate the animations and effects into different objects and place individually.

Hope this helps,

That may be the case. I placed two of the cars on separate ends of the area I am modeling with no animations and I saw the effects. Of course they were in the wrong place due to the curvature of the earth, but that was what I was expecting. But strange that the exhaust effect works, which may have to due with the emitter life time set to unlimited. I'll be happy with the exhaust and just texture the lighting. :)

Hi,

The fact that you see the exhaust smoke, seems to indicate that you can have attachpoints animated. I think it should indeed be possible. But why it does not work for the lights is a bit weird.
