• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Batch convert - Generate object image

Further to Arno's presentations during FsDevConf (excellent job, I've learned so many things) I ran into the process of adding drawcall batching to my own object libraries (I love scenery design).

Then I had the smart idea of updating all the "library management facilities" in the programs I use for scenery design. At no surprise : ADE, Whisplacer, SBuilderX.

But when deleting and rebuilding these databases I also destroyed the thumbnails images that are so useful to preview objects before and/or during theit placement.

MCX has a brilliant option built in the Batch Process menu: adding an optional operator during conversion. 'Generate object image' would be what I need, except for one point: options in image naming. One can choose either the guid, the objet name or the filename.

But scenery building software I use (the above mentioned) use a wider variety of thumbnail names :
{guid} only JPG for SBuilderX
{guid}_objectname JPG for ADE
and even (more complicated)
{guid}.thumb and {guid}.top (in GIF format) for Whisplacer

Could it be possible, as an extended feature, to widen the options list for image naming? This would mean having 2 lines more in the dropdown:
- GUID_Objectname (to comply with ADE thumbnails naming format)
- and GUID.thumb (and a GIF format generated, to fit Whisplacer naming format; assuming one can live without a top view).

This would save a HUGE workload aftermath, since manually adding a "_friendlyname" suffix to each and every image generated by this nice feature of MCX takes plenty of time and is a source for errors.

Do you think this could be done, Arno, pleeeeze ? :D

Hi,

Sounds like a good suggestion. I was not really aware of the other naming conventions. I have added it to the wishlist for future updates.

Nice!

Will be very useful. Btw. you could even add a night-or-day feature choice, making sense when creating thumbnails for lightening objects (airports or city lights, beacons and lighthouses etc) that are not well illustrated by a day view.

Expecting next release, thanks Arno :)

Hi,

I think the day/night option is a nice idea as well. I'll add that to the wishlist as well.

Hi,

I have added the two extra options for ADE ({GUID}_name.jpg) and WhisPlacer ({GUID}.thumb.jpg) now. I checked and WhisPlacer does also support JPG, besides GIF.

I haven't added the day/night option, because that is very easy to do already. Just set the preview in the mode you want for the images and it will use that.

It will be in the development release of tomorrow.
