• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The version of bglcomp.exe and bglcomp.xsd for FSX is obviously different than the one we used in FS9.

Not played with it yet but am I right in assuming that if I want to compile for FSX and FS9 then I will have to use the appropriate version? I guess that means that a scenery design program designed to work in both environments will need to
  1. Offer a choice of version to generate scenery for
  2. Be able to recognize that any FSX features need to be ignored if compiling to FS9
  3. loads of other things that it is too early for me to figure out.....

Given that they are both 'convenient' given the same name they obviously can't reside in the same directory :)

Well I have been playing around today and I can generate scenery from my Scenery Maker program using FSUIPC4 - I can generate effects, Windsocks, rotating beacons and place objects as expected. Scenery compiles fine using either the old or new bglcomp.

To get FS9 generic library objects to show up I can confirm the findings of another thread. That is you need to make copies of the generic, landmark and vehicles bgls from FS9. Change their names where they correspond to one in FSX. I created a new addon scenery sub folder called FS9 Generics. put the libraries in the scenery sub folder and the textures in the texture sub folder. Objects then appear in FSX.

I have not looked into this, but I read that the only difference is in the XSD scheme. But I don't know if with the FsX BGLComp we can also create Fs2004 compatible files if we just prevent using the new commands. Else we would indeed have to use the appropriate version for the FS version we are compiling for.

But why not use the FsX generic objects when you are working for FsX? Only for the backwards compatibility of older sceneries it might be useful to copy these libraries over. For new projects I would stick to the FsX objects only.

Agreed...... :)
