• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can't seem to make any progress

Hey guys,

I am trying to make a somewhat high quality freeware of my local airport but just can't seem to find exactly where to go next. I have the layout of the airport up to date and the next step is to create buildings. I learned how to use sketchup (very nice tool!) and have Instant Scenery 2. I can create the shape and size of the buildings, but I can't figure out how to customize the texture of the buildings. For example, one wall of the building is all glass, how does this work in FS2004? Also, is there a way to actually make the buildings have a sign/banner on them? I know of GMax (although I'm not sure what it can do for FS) but would be nice where I could do all of the custom textures with simple free programs.

I'm not even sure if all of this makes sense but hope to get some help!

Thanks! :)

Yes, it's true that you have to tihink about the texturing of the dae models very well.Dae have some limitations. firstly what you have to think is that the model will have night textures, and in this case will be the diffuse texture or day texture with the editing to be night textures (darken and lights, etc) but it's just that, the transparencies work well. but you will not have the detail that will have a Gmax model (about materials), but the models are pretty good. But this is the boring part of the creation, trial and error and working on the model. but with Sketchup you can make great things.
About free tools Gimps always will be there.
I gues you have see this tutorial http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?title=Build_your_house_using_SketchUp

I can't figure out how to customize the texture of the buildings

Press "B" To open the material editor an then choose the texture you want to use. Then, apply it by clicking on the face you want to have a texture. You can also make a custom texture by selecting the face and right click on it. Then Click on "Make Unique Texture"

is there a way to actually make the buildings have a sign/banner on them?

You can do this by going to tools|3D text from the menu bar.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have made a few basic hangers but now I am on one of the harder buildings at the airport. The first picture is the RW building and the second is the sketchup model. Where I am stuck is on the far left of the building, where there is a LOT of glass. How do I go about this? How do I make the windows on the main part of the hanger too?

Thanks!

Sketchup have material specifically for this task "Translucent". in the dialog box of the paint bucket. you can change or choose the colour, and opacity, if you want see through or not. I can't remember the process but it's easy.
I think reading a little more could be enough.

Thanks for helping out. I have read (a lot) but its hard to understand some of it, I've been learning alot by just poking around myself and seeing what things do (and youtube). Well now I am stuck. I got cruising on the building part (and they look pretty good!) but when trying to create night textures, MCX gives me this:
Stumped.jpg

I did the whole batch convert, add night textures, and compiled it into a .mdl file. When loading into MCX, this pops up. It shows all of the _LM files but wont do anything.

Any suggestions?

It seem like the building not have textures. culd be a problem of the textures folders, the path, etc. The only I see that work are the windows glass :D.
Take it easy, we all have had such problems. What say the warinings "textures can't be found" ?
I always use a Scenery/texture structure for the folders where I put models and textures and usually not fail.

I may have found my problem... So if I have created my buildings 100% in sketchup, how do I go about creating night textures for the building?

You have to tell where the problem was, if not this threads and post are useless, though this be a silly problem.
In skethup is a little more complicated because the way Sketchup texture the object as if this were tiled, with windows and doors no problem, so you have to work around all this

My problem is (from what I've read) that I have to create the night textures in photoshop. Well the thing is, I still have no idea how to get this model and it's textures into photo shop, edit them, and put back into sketchup.

when you export to DAE, it creates a folder with the textures in it wher you saved the dae, you can edit those. Any base colors you use in the model (red, blue, fuschia) is loaded by FS and does not get exported into the folder from what I have seen. Making night texture colors for that might be tricky.
I havent gotten to the night texture portion on my models yet. I am still in the placement portion. Once I perfect the location I will go and 'tune up' my models and add night textures, animations, and additional lighting.

Two Words . . .

"gMax Bible" - can get it on Amazon for $29.99. That and reading through the help file on textures that comes with the FSX SDK.

most of the bible is available on the web for free, just have to search :)
