• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA combine objects for better performance?

Should smaller objects such as runway edge lights or 3d gras polys on airport combine to a larger single 3d objekt in 3dsmax for better performance? Or it makes no difference to place the smaller objects individually with ADE or instant scenery 2? Thanks...

Hi,

If those objects are placed close to each other, you will in general get better performance when you make it one object. That eliminates the overhead of the individual placements.

But there is always a balance, because if you put too much (everything) in one object, the performance will get worse.

Also make sure that your objects have drawcall batching enabled, that will help keep the performance good when multiple instances are placed.

Thanks Arno, only what is "too much"? For example i have a runway edge light with one drawcall and must place it about 100 times on my airport. I better place these individually with ADE or IS2 or should I better collapse the 100 objects in 3dsmax to one object? I can detect no difference in performance.

Hi,

With a few thousand objects you will normally see a performance difference already.

I think I would even do it for runway lights, just to save the headache of placing them all :).

Why don't give it a try? I'd like to know the answer too.
But if you combine those 100 light in gmax and palce with one coordinate, you will get some lights far from the center floating by the curve of the world.
But if you place it individully, this problem will go away. Downside many XML might cause fps hit.
