• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Düsseldorf Airport

AO could use some serious toning down, it makes the hangars look really small as they are now.

okay... tried that to see if I liked it toned down... I don't know yet, I'll take it in to concideration though.

With AO full:

With AO half:

And some solar panels done!

Thoughts on the AO?

Half AO is better, only thing I'd change about it is how high the shading from the ground is, currently, it extends up the 1st floor, and you want like up to the window rows on level ground at the most, otherwise you give out a sense that those hangars are small models.

(English: I'm very happy to see someone from Düsseldorf is also excited by this project. I have indeed forgotten to mention this scenery is intended for FSX and P3D (Although P3D V3 is likely to also be compatible I cannot promisse anything as I'm no P3D user myself, though I hope I'll be able to find osomewhat to test that for me)

Also hier sind noch einige Bilder vom Szenerie in FSX (entschuldigen Sie mich bitten für mein schlechtes Deutsch):

Now the next problem (other then the Hangar 7 texture not being finished yet) is that it's not very sharp in the sim, so I might need to spread some stuff over more textures.... what do we think?

For me, the AirBerlin billboard looks good enough. Or is that picture relatively big on the texture sheets?

It's pritty much a dedicated 1024 texture sheet. I guess some retexturing will be better, makes it all sharper... I'm an idiot to think such a large hangar will fit on one 4096 sheet... well lesson learned now let's fix it!

Looking good. One thing that has helped me in texturing larger hangars is to calculate the pixel density while UV unwrapping.

So assuming you're planning for a 2048 width for the hangar and the hangar is say 80m:

80m / 2048px = approx. 4cm per pixel

Saves the hassle of knowing if your details such as grooves are going to be blurred. The problem with texturing large hangars is that it might look fine in screenshots when you fit the whole hangar in the screenshot but when you try it in the sim and park in a parking spot in front of the hangar then it might look real blurry.

Very true there! Currently I've got the entire hangar on a 4096, I made that without any calculations and that's where things went wrong. I'll just retexture it.

Heh, "overspeed".

Anyways, it's looking good so far! Been dying for a freeware German airport!

Trike ultralight wasn't going fast enought so I stayed at a few feet to cros the field from spawn to hangars, got a nice little overspeed there ;)

Thomas Ruth did a good rendition of DUS. I think it's in Avsim's library.

True there! I mean I only make this because I was fed up with Aerosoft's version to be honest...

ADD: But I've got no clue if mine is gonna be any better then Aerosoft's...

But wouldn't using 4K textures result in having blurry textures for the end user since I believe most people keep their sim at using 2K textures max?

I'm curious, are you going to use photo-real textures for the areas not covered by asphalt, concrete, etc.?

Well as it is a freeware project there probably will be none.... Or at most a limited area...

You're probably right on that. I've been reunwrapping and retexturing a bit in 2048 format (with the option perhaps to include 4096 textures for the people who want to go mad with it?) I think it looks okay now, in terms of texture size that is....
