• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I'll add it to the wishlist and see what I can come up with to make it more clear to the end user what is happening.

Hi Arno

I believe we should now be able to import FS9 library files.
I have tried import Vehicles.bgl but the objects are not dispalying on the correct axis in the preview. They are displaying vertically when you would expect horizontal. Appears something of a similar problem to what we got in the early days of importing FSX mdl files.

Hi Iain,

That is correct, I am still working on importing the transformations correctly for FS2004 MDL files. So they might show with weird transformations at the moment.

Hi Arno

Have tried your latest.
Now trying to import FS9 default vehicles.bgl brings up 'unhandled exception'

Iain

Hi Iain,

I have been working on importing the translations and animations indeed :). For my test objects it worked fine, but apparently not for these default ones. I'll try to load them and see what happens.

Hi Arno,

Thank you for your fantastic tool !

I have a problem with version 1.1.0.0. I import MDL file, the render is fine in modelconverterx but when I export in 3ds there is a problem. The texture file (dds) is not good. I must open dds files, make vertical mirror, save it and now it's good.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

When making textures for FS they have to be flipped indeed. That is probably why you have to flip them back. The problem is not all tools process DDS files the same, some need flipping some not.

Thank you Arno for this answer.

Now I know that it's "normal".

Do you know when modelconverterx will have to import bgl FS 2004 file ?
The lastest version is 1.1.0.0 ?

Thank you again, your tool is fantastic!

Hi,

The latest version can read some FS2004 MDL (and BGL) files already. But as Iain just reported in this thread it still crashes on some. I hope to have some time tomorrow to take a look at those bugs.

Hi,

I was away to Brussels for a few days for my work. Last weekend I made some changes that are in the current development release. But not all FS2004 MDL files work fine already. I will continue with it this weekend, but if you have problems with specific files please let me know.

Hi Arno,

Thank you. I'm waiting for the next version to test it. I have MDL9 and MDL8 files that I can't open.

Thanks again.

Hi,

For the MDL9 file do you get any error message in the event log? That might help me improving the tool.

MDL8 files are not supported at the moment, that is something I hope to add later. But don't hold your breath for it :).

Hi Arno,

I verify if I have error in eventlog with mdl9 when I come back at home (this week-end).
For MDL8, I will be patient...;)

Hi,

Thanks for reporting, it seems something was wrong with resolving the IP address of my home server. Should be working fine again now.

Hi Arno,

Went to get the latest dev. build and IE7 popped up in red lettering and said there was a Certificate Problem and wouldn't let me proceed??

Hi Arno & Lance

Just downloaded the latest 'Test' build without any problem.
I get the same warning as Lance when viewing the 'change log' but you get the option to proceed which I have and have been able to view it.

Iain

Hi Lance,

The dev version is on a little server at my house. That little server does not have the correct certificate for the HTTPS connection. Now that I write this, it probably makes sense to open the normal HTTP port as well, let me update the links.

Hi Arno,

I have download last Dev version without problem.
You are right, I have no problem to import MDL9 files. I'll test with others models, but it seems to be ok.
I have problem only with MDL8 files. Do you know UMC2 soft : it looks like ModelconverterX and can open MDL8 file but have less options and less stability.
If you want to test it, tell me. I know his developper, if you want to contact him...

Thank you again for your fantastic soft.

Hi,

No, I never heard of UMC2. Do you have a link to a website with more information or so? It is always interesting to see what other tools are there.

Hi Arno:

I found this web page (with a download link for UMC2) which you might wish to check out as we await a further reply by "motuslechat":

"Welcome to the Universal Model Creator and Converter (UMC2) Release Version 1.3. This title is a conceit at the moment but it is an eventual aim. This tool can convert, modify and create textured 3D models in several formats in simple ways. More enhancements will come."

PS: If you were not yet aware of this tool, it looks interesting as well:

Excellent work, Arno... I'm looking forward to seeing your ModelConverterX become the ultimate tool for FS object inter-conversion! ;)

Hope this helps! :)
