• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA DirectX Texture Tool

Hello Everyone,....

I just wanted to point out the the DirectX Texture Tool has some interesting quirks, for instance...

If you add mipmaps and the Texture also has an alpha channel... make sure you add the alpha to each mipmap individually... just adding it to the texture doesn't add it to all mips. So heads up!

Are you talking about the Direct X texture tool from the Direct X SDK, the (new or old)NVIDIA Plugins for Photoshop, or Image Tool from the FSX SDK?

Jim

Thanks. I haven't had that problem with the old Nvidia Plugins, but there's a new set out that I haven't installed (they have one for 64 bit Photoshop as well).

Jim

Yes I have the new NVidia Plugins installed also... it also appears to be more stable as well. :)

Funny, I use the FSX Imagetool via CLI switches and don't notice any problems.

DXTex I only use for things that Imagetool can;t do. (Not many!)

Imagetool doesn't allow alpha textures to be combined into diffuse textures that I'm aware of.... but the DirectX Texture Tool does.

Of course it does!! (FSX version ... not sure about the FS2004 one).

A psd file with an alpha channel will automatically be read into Imagetool.

A batch CLI can autocreate your dds +/-mips in any format you like!

........

Range of Shortcuts to Imagetool, using the various CLI options

eg: Create a Shortcut to Imagetool, and select Properties
add: -dxt5 -mips -dds (after the " marks in the command)
Rename this shortcut as Imagetool DXT5

You can drop multiple files onto the shortcut at once ... and if you look at the array of CLI switches available it is extraordinary what you can do.

I use DXTBmp...anybody tried it? I think its a great tool. I also use pixplant to create my bumpmaps and specmaps becuase it can do a little more with less effort but pixplant is payware so not for everybody.

DXTBmps is great ... but doesn't seem to have CLI ability and it won't read alpha channels from psd files (the source-file type I work in)

Thus, it requires adding your alpha channel manually ...

The GUI is nicer than Imagetool by far however.

For opacity maps it is sometimes easier.

Thanks for the Tip,... though with Photoshop Elements 6 its alot harder to get a simple Alpha channel to correspond as such. For instance, you have to make a selection save to be a alpha channel... its not handled in the best manner or even called as such in Photoshop Elements 5 or 6.
