• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Do you think the platform will change for Flight Sim?

Hi,
I think almost everyone here has iPad, Iphone, smartphone or any touch devices. The sale for these devices is growing up surpass the sale of PC.

I have tried some racing games in iPad and Samsung Galaxy S2 (Real Racing). I'm surprise that the graphic in the game is much better than FS2004 and in some degree, FSX too.

I think someday we can have a flight sim platform that works good in iPad and Smartphone. Every clickable buttons can be touched and works. I have purchased X-plane in my SS GS2 but the graphic is not so good.

Microsoft should focus on these device more. Windows 8 is not so popular since the market of PC is winding down.

If Flight use the same strategy like Real Racing from EA, they could have survived. Let the user fly virtual airline in the whole world, get the money and purchase more airplanes for their airline, it should work. I think user will spend money to purchase 747, A380 or Bombardier (if they have) more than spend money on the extended area to fly more. What a pity Flight!

Do you hear some flight programs moving on this path? It would be exciting to know. I think the whole program need to be new for the new touch devices.

One of the attractions of flight simulators for me is that they are more 'sim' and less 'game'

I think this is true for a great number of people.

I don't want to sim on my iPad.

It's weird enough already for me to do some flightsimming on a laptop, so I'll stay way, way clear from simming on phones or tablets.

I'm 100% PC. Always have been. As with the comments so far, anything other than a flight stick, throttles, rudder pedals and such makes FS more like a game than a simulator.

IMO regardless of the "trends" and "transition to newer platforms", I'll stay with my clunky, big, noisy PC.

I had X-Plane and a couple of other fairly nice sims on my iPad. The only times I flew them was when I was up north and my computer wasn't working or I forgot it at home. Wasn't much fun compared with Prepar3D.

I am now on Samsung Galaxy 10.1 (Android tablet) and no longer have FS (that I know of) for it, but just don't really care for FS on that. Fun little games are better for me, as I usually will play them before bed at night, sitting with the puppy out front, etc.

Birds is hiliarious.. lol...

On the same topic.. Platforms..

What about Outerra as a 'software' platform? My goodness that is impressive. They are keeping it affordable for garage startup studios to make games for. Smooooooth running.

I think Aerosoft were going to use Outerra as a sim platform.

From memory they shelved that idea, but I might be wrong.

Has anything actually reached RTM using Outerra yet?

Bill! They're not made by Apple!! Are you having a brainstorm??? Someone nearby please check the man is okay, I have a terrible feeling about this...

It's not really surprising, with a racing game you're basically recreating a few square miles with the road and barriers in high detail. For a flight sim you're trying to recreate the whole planet which means you have to spread your resources over a much larger area, e.g. at 300 feet you can see 25 odd miles away, which gives you 1963 square miles to recreate.
For most racing games you're basically inside an upturned bowl which they paint the sky on.

I find it funny when people say that PC gaming is dying. It most certainly is not! PC gaming is still very strong. Just look at Steam. What about NVIDIA? Or ASUS? These brands would be dying off if people were no longer gaming on PCs. Try running a game like Battlefield 3 on an iPhone or tablet. And console gaming is nice, but there's so many people that still like to build their own PCs (more powerful than consoles) to run their games.

And to the OP, how does a flight sim on a phone or small touch screen device sound at all reasonable? Having a sim on a PC is so much more usable. First off, you are limited to your control devices (no joystick, panels, yoke, pedals, etc). Plus, you already have the advantage of the very powerful hardware that can be bought for PCs. You can achieve so much more in-depth graphics on the PC than a mobile phone (and have the advantage of a much bigger screen). It's not that surprising the racing game you mention looks better than FS2004 and FSX. These sims (using decade old technology) are not hard to beat, even on a mobile device. But one could say that the latest graphics engines put the games for mobile devices to shame.

Nice to know other people's opinions.

I agree with you all about the PC flight sim that PC has more powerful and more controllable by joystick.

Racing game is a skill game. You use less thought, just use your skill for driving to surpass the rivals.

Flight sim is another thing. We have to calculate, plan ahead and the world is much bigger in our visual field than racing game.

Are there anyone use touch screen PC and work on all the clickable buttons and switches? Using touch screen with TrackIR should be a wonderful experience.

But we cannot deny that mobile devices are very fast growing market. The game companies might looking for this more to get more sales on these devices. Sim and games have a blurry boundary. Sim is a niche market so they would like to be wider, that's the way Microsoft think with Flight. But they choose the wrong path. Who cares about getting AEROCACHES.
If they turned Flight to be a career of a captain, start with small airplane and earn the money for their mission. Then purchase another aircraft and fly around the complete world. Flight could have survived.
