• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Does an image to be used for a material have to be square?

The best way to remove anomalies from the Bing aerial imagery is to replace or edit the tile and make a CGL aerial addon. The basic process is here: Removing Docks from Lakes and Bays
The only edition to that process is that you only need to replace the Highest LOD used from the Bing Imagery. If the highest tile is level 17, then you can replace that 17 level tile... you don't need to make level 20 for the aerial to be corrected.
Attached is a small project with corrected Bing tiles. It removes 2 docks spread over 2 level 17 tiles... the highest level used for that tiled area in MSFS. The 2 tiles were 'fixed' with Paint.Net, but Gimp or Photoshop would work as well. I just copy and paste similar water areas to cover the docks, and make the area look like water. To fix those 2 tiles took about 20 minutes, start to finish. No need to try to match coloring in the sim, or worry about time of day coloring issues.

You're not able to edit the image so it looks exactly correct once compiled?
I never tried as I expected the coloration/brightness etc to be similar and as PhysicsTeacher states
there is no way, other than trial and error with an image editor for the source image
I was wondering if there was an easier method (than trial and error).

Thanks for getting this going. I have more work to do.
And thanks to you for all your work and experimentation which is appreciated by myself and I'm sue by other readers here. I do note that using the material library gives the user the use of the coloration which will help blend it in as well as feathering the edges something I don't think projected mesh does (and so adding transparency around the edges of the image with an image editor is necessary).

I am wondering if mamu will read this and offer some of his thoughts too.

Dick,
Before I go off and make a CGL aerial addon, are those aerial images a fixed size? I am looking to 'copy' a small rectangular area (maybe around 4 meters x 8 meters) and place it over an adjoining area where there is a 'ghost' of a floating dock.

I have created CGL images a while ago and mostly forgot but quickly refreshed my memory.

[added later]
I have performed most of the tasks required to create a geo referenced (tif?) image HOWEVER I have a problem
The area I want to use is very small and so it is near impossible to do any geo-referencing.
Consider the following image which has plenty of points I could use but I don't want them in the final image.
Maybe I can include the pier to the left and ramp to the right which will be 'covered' by objects I have created with Blender. Tutorials suggest adding 4 or 5 reference points.
Your thoughts please

Sorry for so many questions but I don't want to spend a lot of time only to find it didn't work.

OK got it BUT is there a method to add an Asset Group m(using Inspector) I assume it is a CUSTOM type and then CGL asset type and no template required?

Thanks

you can add a small area of a satellite image using a projectedmesh.

Thanks I tried that grabbing satellite imagery from Google Earth but the color match was worse that the 'ghost' I am trying to cover. Maybe I should have used bing maps I wonder. I will try later.
I note that even using CGL aerials color matching can be an issue (I'm not good using image editors to change colors to match).

Pity also that Asobo don't update the satellite imagery from time to time as the imagery they are using (at Sechelt) is years old and the 'ghost' I am trying to remove is from a dock that has been replaced to another location and the old dock removed.

According to Google satellite view historical images the dock 'ghost' we see in MSFS did not exist (was removed) sometime BEFORE 2017. Pity Asobo decided to use pre 2017 satellite imagery for a product not released until 2020.

We would need to continue CGL discussion here
I will try and work through what I read there and see how I go.

I have posted a reply there - found it (tile debug) under Options > Ground sneaky why wouldn't be under Debug I wonder.
