• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Drawing road lines

By road lines, I mean vehicle road lines, mainly behind the airport, at the autopark area, etc.

In ADEX the lines of the Vehicle Link tool are not the lines I want, I want right-left edges, solid, center lines sometimes dashed, sometimes solid and WHITE for sure. And also curved at some places.

I could not find an easy solution for this aim. I did this: First I made the asphalt roads, squares etc. by using asphalt textured Vehicle links (without lines) + asphalt textured aprons with ADEX. Afterwards I placed a model (mdl) of a big plane(size app. 500x1000 m) , with texture (white lines) with alpha hand-drawn in Photoshop with Pen tool etc. on top of these asphalt roads.

With this method I made some trials (in fact this method takes too much time), result is not so bad.. The difficulty is that you have to place this plane very very precisely, although I had made some helper shapes, etc. because the plane is so big, the positioning is not very precise, for example the center line of the road sometimes is not just centered, moreover, I have used a DXT5 texture with size 4096x2048 with mipmaps (12 mb! ) , but indeed when you come very close, the resolution of the lines are not so good. (compared to the default highway lines)

The question is, does anyone have a better idea?

From a realism point of view, I wonder whether the middle line is an element of ADEX or of FSX Standards. Perhaps Jon can answer that one. If the latter then only workarounds would be possible.

I made it with the method I desribed above. I have made a plane with size app. 1000x 500 m and used a resized resolution of 4096x2048 texture with mipmaps which made an 12 Mb. Besides, the result is not so good, because the resolution gets worse if you come close, and to fix this big plane at the most precise position is difficult, I mean it's trial & error.

I thing there should be a more clever method. Because in many payware sceneries I see many customized lines, inside the apron and everywhere. And they are nice, well positioned, and high resolution. I wonder how they do it. The middle & edge lines of the closed links, etc. does not match this, even I tried them, they get messy if you use many nodes, esp. try to draw curves..

Does anyone have any experience about this?

The roads produced by using ADE for FSX are the standard terrain roads and ADE has no control over their appearance other than using different types. I am not sure how easy or difficult it would be to use the Custom Ground Line function in ADE to create better looking roads but it might be worth a look

Custom Ground Line function ? I really have never seen such a function in ADEX ? Where is it? A button? A menu item? Could you show me with a pic ?

Excellent ! This is what I was looking for. Very easy and very useful. My ADE version was old... I started making it and it looks so nice.
