• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Duplicate objects

Not sure where to ask this, so I apologize if this is the wrong spot.

I use quite a bit of freeware scenery, which uses freeware objects. Sometimes the instructions will specify big libraries like Cal Classic, or EZ Scenery which contain object libraries from multiple creators or individual libraries such as Airport Restaurants, etc.

This issue is that this creates a situation where I will end up with multiple copies of the same object libraries (exp; large hangers).

My question is; other than consuming disc space does having multiple copies of the same object library affect FSX? Do the libraries result in multiple references to individual objects being loaded into memory or is FSX smart enough to load only the first instance and avoid duplicates?

Just trying to determine if it's worth removing the duplicates.

Thanks,
Ernie

I haven't seen any problems with multiples of libraries. FS seems to choose which one to use rather randomly.

One issue I've seen is if one of those library installations does not have the proper textures present, then the objects are black when that version is used.

That said, the CalClassic libraries have been curated to make sure that they have the proper night textures, texture formats (prevents some blurries), etc., at least as we found the problems. So perhaps do a search for the most commonly used ones and make sure to only have one copy of those that you know to be good.

It is best to only install them once indeed as Tom said. Else you don't know which one is loaded and if you have multiple versions of the same library you might get unexpected results as a different version can be used.

Therefore it's best to install the library as a separate entry in the scenery library and not have it inside some addon.
